During his first few years in the Majors, he could really bring it.

I was in the other room during the Giants pre-game show with Marty Lurie, but I did overheard Bill Laskey say that Vida had been in some considerable pain just recently. I believe he mentioned something like that Vida was now at peace and now at rest. I'm paraphrasing here, but it was something along those lines.
Vida performed in a day and age when most baseball games were not televised. You got the Saturday and Sunday games of the week and that was about it. I did get to see him pitch when he played for the Giants, but as good as he was (and he was good), he was past his prime.

RIP. Those old A's teams were really something special. Just a ridiculous assortment of talent with Blue, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Bert Campaneris, Sal Bando and more.

Charles O'Finley broke them up when they still had a few more runs. Insurance Man, Carpetbagger.

During my years in HS football, I shopped for my extra gear at Joe Rudi Sports in McHenry Village (Modesto). It was the place to go in the late 1970's.

I came into being as a baseball fan in the mid to late 80's when the Steroid ... er ... Bash Brothers were at their height.
One thing I always appreciated during that time was the acknowledgment and celebration of the early '70s A's teams that dominated the post-season.
They made sure to let the youngsters, like myself at the time, know that Vida Blue was a key cog in those teams. RIP Vida Blue, absolute legend.

Met him at a San Leandro Pizza Hut in '92 after a pony league all-star game. I had just thrown a combined no-hitter, and told him such. He asked me why it wasn't a perfect game? I said I walked the #9 hitter. He asked why I did that, then laughed and autographed a napkin for me. I still have that napkin.
RIP
