It's amazing how much dogs/pets become a part of the family... A week & a bit on I'm starting to come to terms with it, normal interests are starting to return (I'll be up for the Bunnies v Tigers tonight) ... There is just an empty feeling not having one of my boys around. (Had two dogs, now only have one )

~~~PS~~~
If any of you guys have a dog that gets a mysterious stomach pain, you might want to get an ultrasound done. I took my dog into the vet 3 weeks ago with one.
They kept him overnight, did a physical exam, x-rays & blood-work. Everything came back negative & he was released the next day. He was down the day after, but was back to his normal healthy self 2 days on. It appeared to be little more than a strained/pulled muscle.
Fast forward 3 weeks & he is hit by it again. This time though, by the time I get him to the vet he can't stand on his back legs. I asked the vet "How bad is this & do they come in much worse?" he says "He has seen much worse." It made me feel better as I left the clinic to wait at home for the prognosis. 2 - 2 & 1/2 hours later the vet calls & he needs emergency surgery, 5 - 6 hours later he calls again & they've lost him on the operating table.
I was in shock, heartbroken. I just couldn't wrap my head around how he went from healthy & energetic to dead.
Hemangiosarcoma
Never heard of it until last Wednesday. I wish I'd known sooner.
wondering why they didnt pick it up in the first xray?!? or do more tests to make sure nothing untoward?
Hope your other dog is okay, must be devastated losing his mates, especially when they go looking for their mate and cant find them.
Sorry to hear that sports, we were lucky enough to save our Lab after a scare a few years ago.
I was poking about in the shed and yard and noticed her standing, looking a bit odd and very slight muscle tremor. Quick look around the yard turned up a packet of snail bait. It had been sitting on a shelf in the shed unopened and claimed to have child and pet deterent. Didn't stop our lab who will eat anything she had managed to open the pack and eat most of it. Couldn't raise the vet in town so tried to get as much salt water into her as I could to get her vomiting without much luck.
Wife managed to get onto the vet in a nearby town, by this stage she had start to convulse heavily, a very quick 20km drive and I carried her straight from the car to the operating table. They got hoses in both ends of her and irrigated managing to flush her fairly well. After that it is just a case of dealing with the symptoms like very high temp and the convulsions as their is no antidote.
Vet said about 30g is enough to kill a large dog and she had eaten most of a kg bag, you have about 30min window from ingestion as once it has made its way from the gut to intestines it is usually to late and the damage has been done. She had a small amount that had made it into the intestines so we made it with minutes to spare.
Family and employees are all OK, seems like they were among the few to keep their heads and were aware of what was actually happening as it unfolded.
Said the police seemed to be in as much shock as most of the bystanders after it unfolded, the oldest of the victims was the closest to them. They managed to get her lying down, comfortable, calm her, cut away the slacks she was wearing and stem the bleeding from her leg wound while brother had the sense to run to the nearby doctors surgery to get medical help before emergency responders arrived.
Quick thinking & response from the family & employees, 220. Crazy scenes, police probably don't deal with these types of situations very often anymore.
Hopefully the bystanders pull through ok, especially the elderly woman who copped the worst of it.
It's going to be a messy investigation figuring out who's to blame & if the police made the correct decision. The guy with the knife clearly needs mental help & reports are saying he was out on a one hour day pass against recommendations. It seems his Dr's advice was overruled by a higher offical within the clinic, even though he had expressed homicidal thoughts.
His family are upset that he was shot instead of tasered. Also there were a number of bystanders wounded, so expect things to get ugly.
Tough being a police officer imo, when these things happen you only have a split second to react.
Glad to hear your pet emergency had a happy ending, 220... Quick thinking & reacting again, saved your dog. I spoke to the vet when I went down to view him after he passed away & the vet commended my quick response. He said I gave him the best chance to survive & that it's not uncommon for people to find dogs who have Hemangiosarcoma dead somewhere at home.
No worries sporto, all the best! We had a favourite pet dog a little fox terrier crossbreed, bloody intelligent, and had the biggest mates who waited for him at the front gate. Conan my dog would look up at us and stare out thru the window begging for us to let him out to go play, we did many a times but someme down the road had it in for us and ran him over. Definitely was not an accident.
That's horrible, 4x4. People can be cruel & vindictive. Hopefully that person got some form of comeuppance. Foxies / Foxy crosses are such great little dogs too.
X-ray doesn't detect it, only an ultrasound can.
Thanks 4x4, he's a lot more clingy that's for sure. He also was unusually quiet the first week, but is starting to find his voice again. Still missing his mate, even though he used to harass him.
The call to use pistol over taser is a big one but there are a few things people need to keep in mind
Tasers aren't considered non lethal just less lethal than the other option.
Taser is pretty much a one chance option.
If you miss, if both darts don't both penetrate flesh or a myrid of other things that can go wrong do it is totally ineffective.
At the range a taser needs to be used if things go wrong you haven't got time to then use your sidearm.
Mother in law asked the exact question this morning, we were in the shop I walked around the other side of the counter and stood 5m away and said to her Im running at you with a knife you have the option of a taser with one shot that may work if you hit me with it or a pistol with 15 plus shots which would you choose.
She replied when you put it like that there is only one option.
Spoke to brother again after lunch today, it was around midnight before they finished giving statements and got to pack up. With 24hrs to process it all he is of the opinion it was attempted suicide by cop. He doesn't have a issue with them shooting in the first instance although he questions the need for the final shot/s but like I said to him if they were justified at the start then he was still on his feet and still refusing to drop the knife so you don't have to many choices.
From what he saw he thought probably only one of the bystanders may have been hit directly and even it may of been a shot that had gone through the suspect. The reports say he was shot 3 times and even at midnight they couldn't confirm how many shots were fired. Said the GPs he grabbed out of their surgeries were great, couldn't do much more than had been done to stop bleeding but had IVs in before paramedics arrived and no doubt the victims would have been relived to have a doctor treating them so quickly.
Don't think it matters what sort of emergency it is a quick response seems to be the key. Easier said than done as thinking rationally under the circumstances is much easier said than done.
I think you're spot on with this post.
I personally agree with the police officer's decision. Things escalated quickly & there was too many people around to take a risk with an individual exhibiting dangerous & erratic behaviour.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I think you're the only one who tipped the Tigers this week.
They were outstanding in the first half, producing two contenders for try of the year. (Unfortunately I feel asleep 5 mins into the start of the second ).
(Amazing tries at 0:25 & 1:33)
