So even for void years?

Let's take Campbell so I can understand this correctly. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/devondre-campbell-19069/

1 year deal. Has 4 void years, so 5 years total. The link above is showing a cap hits of:
2024 - 2.2 mil
2025 - 2.68
2026 - 670k
2027 - 670k
2028 - 670k

Lets say he plays this year and walks. We then only have dead money next year? And that amount would be 2.68mil? What exactly is the point of these multiple void years if it just rolls into one?

The $2.68m becomes dead money, reason for 4 void yrs is to prorate the bonus over the max of 5yrs.

Very interesting, didn't realize my understanding of that was incorrect. That makes me feel way better about these void years. Thanks for the info!

They have made it so confusing. Some of the more nuanced i gave up on.

But for this, if for some reason the player is cut it all (still) accelerates to now. Correct?

I don't blame you, they make it seem like it's harder than it really is.

As long as the player is cut before June 1st then it all accelerates onto the current years cap, if after June 1, then it gets divided over 2yrs, the current years prorated bonus + any GTD base salary is dead money for the first year, then the 2nd yr the remainder of the prorated bonus becomes dead money, so $10.3M for AA this year, $15.5M in 2025.

Yeah. The june 1st stuff is pretty easy, But throw the void years and signing bonus stuff in is what gets it wonky, especially on Spotrac and OTC.

A tip of the cap to you.

AB, Just curious, how much did Brock make total for the 2023 year? And thank you for all the work you do & have done. Fantastic work all the time.

AB,is the year that they give up on some of their projects? They seem to be making decisions earlier, rather than hold on to guys that aren't a fit (Sermon, TDP). Is this the last go round for Ambry, Drake and Davis.

Before taxes $870k, not sure after taxes, not sure if that $780k he earned gets taxed, most likely though, but a nice extra payday for Brock, & the others like DMo.

I can see them cutting guys like Gray, Ambry, Drake but not till cut down day.
How are we fitting Brandon Aiyuk with this? Structuring towards later years?

They'll have his bigger cap hits after 25 when Trent Deebo and Juice come off the books.

It'll be a deal like Bosa's, low 2024-2026 cap numbers, then backloaded, will help keep the players we want in the future. We should save up to $8m in cap room if we give him a $25m signing bonus.

Pretty much, but the team will be able to retain Deebo, Kittle, CMC since they all have deals that void after 2025, with dead money, they can retain those 3, if they keep it up, and have to use little cap room to retain them.
Updated 2024 salary cap room with all deals in, $6,197,214

Eric Saubert & Rock Ya-Sin signed similar deals, both got $1.125M base salaries, $71,250 signing bonuses, $71,250 roster bonus for making week 1 roster, & $25K workout bonuses, but Saubert got $400K of his base GTD, Ya-Sin $985K, both deals are veteran minimum salary benefit deals, so only $985K of their base salaries count against the cap, plus the bonuses, except Saubert's, his $71,250 roster bonus doesn't right now, unless he makes the week 1 53-man roster, as he didn't make a 2023 53-man roster for week 1.

Thank you for all the work you do. IMO, managing the salary cap is as important as drafting and coaching and building a roster. If you mismanage the cap and get into salary cap hell, you run the risk of having your Super Bowl window slammed shut and being forced to jettison great players. In the beginning, I wasn't a fan of Paraag but my opinion has changed and I think he's done a great job managing our cap and ensuring that our Super Bowl window remains open.
