Him, Ted, and Kitty are our three best. Apologies to vern. You have to be able to catch the ball to be a tight end. Too much excitement with Vern, no disrespect.

Vernon Davis could catch the ball. He just needed to be stopped and facing the quarterback to do it. In fairness, he actually Could also catch the ball over his shoulder, but it had to be dropped in there perfectly. No adjustments possible.

He had 13 touchdowns twice, in '09 and '13. Not bad. Just no catching range.

Davis had all the traits to be an all time great. Maybe one of the top 5 ever. He could block and had crazy speed. I just don't think he quite ever reached his potential. As you pointed out he wasn't great at catching the ball over the shoulder in full stride. He also didn't make a lot of contested catches or lay out for a reception. Still a very good TE but I had higher hopes for him.

Am I thinking of someone else, wasn't it VD who always jump up to catch the ball, even if it would hit him in the chest? Takes the speed out of your stride when your feet aren't on the ground. His speed and strength was a mismatch for anyone, but could have been even more of a force.
VD wasnt an amazing receiver in terms of hands and catching. It was well known at the time. What he was amazing at was blocking and his speed made him a crazy mismatch especially back in those days. His wheel routes, everyone knew they were eventually coming, but not many could keep up with him. Alex loved those.

Which is what made that Catch III against the Saints so special.

That was VD. That hop was what got him rocked by Kam Chancellor in that memorable beatdown :(

no TE should ever be drafted in the 1st round.. they should not be even invited to the combine..
