49ers Sign Linebacker Stone Blanton to a Three-Year DealMay 12, 2025 at 11:40 AM

The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed LB Stone Blanton to a three-year deal.

Blanton (6-1, 227) joins the 49ers as an undrafted free agent from Mississippi State University. He appeared in 36 games (24 starts) over three seasons at Mississippi State (2024) and South Carolina (2022-23) and registered 184 tackles, seven passes defensed, 6.0 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, 1.5 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.

In 2024, Blanton made 12 starts and registered 125 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 0.5 sack. In 2023 at South Carolina, he started in 12 games and notched 52 tackles, 1.0 sack, one interception and one forced fumble. As a true freshman, he appeared in 12 games and registered seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one pass defensed.

A 22-year-old native of Madison, MS, Blanton attended Madison-Ridgeland Academy (Madison, MS) where he posted 285 tackles, 47.5 tackles for loss, 19.0 sacks, five passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
Any diehard Mississippi State Bulldog fans in here? Give us your take on Blanton as a LB from what you saw. 125 tackles last year playing in the SEC is nothing to sneeze at.
Seems like a coachs pick for special teams.
My recollection from looking at him was good instincts, too many missed/weak tackles, athletically not special. When I looked at him after they signed him I decided that my recollection was right.

I don't think he can cover enough ground to play LB on the 49ers.

ST grist for the mill.
Timing of the news make it seem more significant, but he really just signed his UDFA contract. He's signed on later than the others because he got married and went on a honeymoon.

Stone Blanton signed a 3 year, $2,977,000 contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including $12,000 signing bonus, $92,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $992,333. In 2025, Blanton will earn a base salary of $840,000 and a signing bonus of $12,000, while carrying a cap hit of $844,000 and a dead cap value of $92,000.

compare to

Jakob Robinson signed a 3 year, $2,965,000 contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including an average annual salary of $988,333. In 2025, Robinson will earn a base salary of $840,000, while carrying a cap hit of $840,000.

This is the new standard. Stuff happens for NBA teams too.

If you watch the games a lot of Blanton's tackles happen where he is chasing from behind and downfield. A lot of tackles by itself isn't an impressive achievement.

He may be a good NFL LB, but it's not the way to bet.

I know this is from May 12th, but just to correct you on Robinson, he got a $20K signing bonus, & $100K of his base salary GTD, not the most they gave out this year, Kiner got $234K of his base salary GTD, Neyor got $230K I believe.
