I don't see DPOY. Not because he won't be good, but because you need a lot of flash to win those types of awards. Brock Bowers got 1st team All Pro because he had a high volume of catches, but wasn't anywhere near as efficient as Kittle. If Williams did win DPOY it's because our Dline is destroying pockets and Williams is eating a lot- similar to AA's 10 sack year in 2019.

I think there is a very real chance that Mykel crushes his sack production from college even as a rookie. Partly because he may be seeing a lot more 1 on 1s with Bosa on the other side and the big bodies we added in the middle.

I also think our scheme will allow him to shine more with the splash plays.

Now you guys may be right and guys like Pearce, Walker or Abdul Carter may get more pass rush looks or given their ability to rush with speed maybe they get more of those sexy stats but at the same time it also wouldn't shock me to see a quick glow up from Williams in our scheme.

But I'm just waiting to hear how he looks in camp first. I recall Aldon getting high praise from Joe and the other guys quickly. Likewise we saw the bust coming a mile away with AJ Jenkins in those early camp reviews.

It's not always the case but you can feel which direction the player is swinging early on. I believe Mykel will bring the good stuff.

Thanks for reminding me about AJ Jenkins. That was unnecessary

Oh, the A.J. Jenkins blocker stopped working? Damn.

Nice read. Very informative article about us falling in love with Mykel. I'm excited to see how this 20 year old kid develops this season. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people as a pass rusher and we already know what he brings as a run defender. DROY is possible.

Would be cool if he has a similar year to Nick Bosa as a rookie - dude was dominant from the gate but just had some stuff to clean up, a lot of missed sacks, but tons of disruption and edge setting

Given who they drafted I can see them using Mykel to set the edge and then having Martin blitz behind him etc. Usually players adapt to the run game faster so i think he will do ok at worst.

It most certainly does happen. With regularity.

We have seen far too many times how NFL coaching/scheme trumps lessor college talent levels.

I stopped being surprised decades ago when players end up better NFL players than they were college players.

Once you add in NFL nutrition, his body maturing, film study and the rest of the stuff that comes with a NFL career...anything is possible. The likely hood might be debatable, but certainly possible.

I think if we wanted to predict how it would be possible for Williams to have a leap in sack production in the NFL, I think we would want to start with opportunity. Eventually I am sure the plan is to give him more downs on the field than he saw in college. Plus the dude stays on his feet. Probably the clearest thing that comes off his YouTube videos is the dude stays upright and will fight to the whistle. He had several clean up sack in college, he could get more of them here.

I am sure many of us wanted a "meet at the QB" guy like Dee Ford on the other side of Bosa, but I could see Bosa moving a QB and Williams just staying alive and upright long enough to find the QB once he is moved and Bosa compromised the pocket. So even if you don't buy into the untapped potential of Williams as a conventional pass rusher...there is probably a clear path to him having more sacks in an NFL season then he had in his college seasons.

I don't personally put alot of faith in Williams as a pass rusher that goes around the end with regular success, but I do think he looked fantastic as both an inside out, and outside in stunt threat. The guy looks comfortable on his feet and in motion, he looks comfortable shooting the gap on stunts, and he looks poised and level headed when he pulls up and allows the play to come to him while buying time for reinforcements to come and help. I would imagine he is going to give Brock Purdy hell in training camp on bootlegs. Dude is kinda like the terminator from the 80s...yeah you might momentarily out maneuver it...but it is still coming and never really stops. That is what I think Williams is, a dude that fights to stay active and get closer to the QB. He will get his opportunities.

Don't come in here to troll with this nonsense please.

There are other ways to show that anything is possible without projecting injuries on our young players.
Wonder why he would say that? Glad he wants to be versatile

My guess is that he feels confident in his ability to run stuff the middle and wreak havoc on the qb from the interior.

honestly if he lined up next to Bosa on the interior - that would be a hell of a pass rush. Just slide like this

Bosa - Williams - Collins/west - Collins/Yetur

that would be excellent for run stuffing and pass rush on the left side and then have Warner/Martin over the right side.

at worst, we should have a respectable run defense. Which will help us win more games in itself. Just need special teams to be "average" and we'd of made the playoffs.
one of the front page articles with lynch talked about this pick. We had heard before about them looking to trade up. New was the info that if he was off the board, they would have taken an offensive player. I figured it at first it would have meant OT but it would have been a reach for the next one Conley.
I was then wondering if it would have been Warren. There was also the talk of an offer of a 2nd for Kittle. They still would have needed a DE but that pick could have gotten someone like Oladejo. Interesting, but glad we got our guy that should pan out and also kept Kittle.

. .
We were looking to trade up to #8 with the Panthers?

Yeah definitely glad that didn't happen. The Jets at #7 was the last pick for a blue chip player worth trading up for. Trading up to #8 would've cost #100 AND #138 minimum.
