Baldy is saying what we all are seeing

"all"

Mykel just turned 21 right before the season started. He was dealing with a high ankle sprain that he played on most of last year at Georgia. He hasn't had the luxury of working on the get off from the edge as much.

Apparently he ran a 1.59 10 yard split during his workouts. That certainly shows he's got the athletic ability. My guess is he'll be working on it during the offseason and there is no reason to call the guy a bust or assume he can't be a long term edge player.

Michael Bennett, Seattle's prototypical EDGE/DT hybrid who made their SB winning defense work put up a 5.13 40 and 1.78 10 yard split. He had 1 sack in each of his first 2 NFL seasons.

Not everyone jumps out of the gates dominating like an Aldon Smith. Mykel is clearly showing the talent is there. It's about working the technique and the sacks will come.
I think the unintended consequences regarding the loss of 97 can't be understated. Coupled with 54. The best to expect now is to allow extremely valuable experience and growth for the youngsters who are to be a part of the strategic plan. If we can get to the final tournament that would be remarkable and great. If there's a lack of effort or some other BS then sure I can understand the negative comments, but I personally don't see it. But I'm not in the building or a professional coach or player.

Could be worse!

Halfway through his rookie season and you think he's a bust? Lol, you're joking right?

I feel like DLine is one of those positions where you either got it or you don't. The real game changers make impact immediately.

He may be a solid player down the line but he's not going to be a cornerstone guy. Maybe he can be a solomon thomas type.

Mykel Williams SHOULD get around 5 sacks this season. Honestly I'm good with that. And I think this Sunday will be his breakout game!!! Keion White and Cle Ferrell should give him some help!!!

I don't think we can be that dogmatic about it, particularly in William's case. He missed valuable offseason time in developing a pro-level strength and conditioning level. Getting to that level is almost always a struggle for rookies, even highly rated ones coming out of college.

I see Williams gaining valuable experience this season, then putting some polish on during the offseason and coming back close to what we all hope next year.

OTOH, I'm not sure a strong edge rusher was the top priority when he was chosen. Yes, edge pressure was part of the hope, but sealing the edge against the run, and moving inside in other situations was part of the equation as well.. With Bosa on one end and at least a decent rotational guy on the other, it would allow Williams to use his length and strength inside. Of course, that is all blown up now with hindsight the prevailing view, but I believe we will see a much more complete player in 2026 than we will see this year.

He's already (much) better than ST ever was when he was here imo

Tho, if you ask Lynch, he might beg to differ. Afterall, Williams didn't go to Stanford

Seems like that is the general consensus
Sounds like it's an ACL. Of course, 49ers can't ever leave a game without a major injury.
