Nick Nolte--before s**t went real life sideways for him--in Blue Chips (1994). Blue Chips remains one of the best, behind's the scenes, sports movies I have seen when it comes to the issue of money in the game. For my money, Nolte's closing monologue where he tears down the facade that sports were (keep in mind, this was before NIL) at the time was an epic performance that had it all rage, regret, sorrow, love, anguish, and self-disgust. This rant is dedicated to that performance.
I hate we live in a time where I have to say, "Fropwns, life long niner fan; married a niner loving wife, made my daughter a niner fan. Etc,etc."
f**k that noise. You KNOW I am down. I will be there gutted in the end if we lose, again. So when I say it, I want you to know it hurts me to say it. And while I realize some folks on the Niners are putting out effort, I have to say that...
This team looks like total dog s**t. Outside of Purdy, Mason, Fred, and Jennings, who are the most consistent right now, we look terrible. The long outlook is that we will get main line folks back in the weeks to come. The short term is that it might not matter if we remain below .500 by the time we face the Chiefs, let alone the Cowboys. The 49ers are wounded, but are also committing self-inflicted wounds. Thus, I feel like it is time for us to come to Walsh, as it were, and admit some uncomfortable f**king realities:
You can't win, if you can't, as a team, catch. You can't win, if you can't block consistently on the offensive line. You can't win, if you can't complete the clutch kick. You can't win if the defensive scheme is bad, or, perhaps worse, if the coach is perhaps in over his head. Let's add to that, you can't win, if the players are not executing on the defensive side of the ball. You can't win, when Brock is giving you everything, but the team is not responding enough. You can't win, if you do not have a consistent pass rush. You can't win, if you can't stay healthy. You can't win, if you don't, as the head coach, adjust to the reality of your team as it is from week to week--i.e., are you playing the best you can at wide receiver? (More on this in a second). You can't win, if you are relying on a wide receiver who got paid, but still, three games in, is not picking up his performance. You can't win, if another wide receiver, in a pivotal moment can't complete the primary job of his occupation: catching. You can't win, if the offense is scoring roughly 24.3 ppg, but the defense, once the hallmark of this fine organization, is allowing damn near the same amount (23.0 ppg). Generally speaking, you can't win when you flub so f**king bad on special teams. You can't win, if you are relying on what you have done in the past to justify why everything is okay; further, you can't win, if you feel that you can just turn it on when you f**king feel like it.
Life is hard, football is hard. You have to show up and put in effort. In this divided election cycle, that is a message that should resonate with errrrybody. But, please, no politics, it is just an observation.
I have two more observations for you.
You can't win, if the organization does not do something now, not later, to fix the situation. Something has to happen to reign this s**t in.
And lastly, you can't win, if you have been at the height of excellence for the past five years only to continue to fall short and you have not learned something from it. Not just as a coach, but as players. There has been a lot of talk about how we have the best team for a while. Yet, we have not finished the job.
Prove me wrong. Please. I am begging you. For once, prove me f**king wrong. But, I have seen this before. It is damn hard to stay consistently good. And right now, we are not good, let alone super.
I am Fropwns.
