This reminds me of trading Buckner for Kinlaw

In theory it makes sense. Practically it requires hitting on your picks and that's been an issue

Depending do the Niners have enough cap space to pay him. Pay for what you know what you have. Don't try to cheap out hoping you'll find a good guard in the draft. I understand if they don't have cap space, but if you do have cap, pay the man. Purdy is having an amazing start because of this oline. The oline is letting him cook.

So, having nothing else to do this afternoon, I checked out the data. I was somewhat surprised. In short, the best Guards are picked early and get paid well.

You are correct but if you add 1st and 2nd round together it doesn't work. Here is the breakdown of the top 20, and 21-40 ranked guards and where they were drafted (PFF).

Top 20:
Rd 1 - 3
Rd 2 - 4
Rd 3 - 7
Rd 4 - 1
Rd 5 - 1
Rd 6 - 3
Rd 7 - 0
UDFA - 2

21-40
Rd 1 - 5
Rd 2 - 5
Rd 3 - 3
Rd 4 - 2
Rd 5 - 2
Rd 6 - 0
Rd 7 - 2
UDFA - 2

Pay scale shows the top paid Guards with 9 getting $20,000,000+/year. (overthecap)

$15,000,000+ = 10

$10,000,000+ = 7

Nice breakdown I'd give Puni 15M, you don't break this OL especially if Trent plays next year. Brendal is the real "?" Took him 5 years to properly command Kyles offense and is now 34 years old but he's playing at such a high level coordinating the OL you have to run it back. Cant remember where I heard/read it but a cerebral Center is key to Shannahans offense
Starts his 4th season next year. Trade him for a 3rd round draft pick to a team willing to give him the big money. Move Colby to RG and give the money to Quenton Nelson-3 years. Nelson will be motivated-too much losing. Might not go for top dollar like a 28 year old. No big injury history and it can become a 1 year to year contract at age 34. Purdy's protection guaranteed.

Finally get a young impact player and you say trade him? It took too long to get to this point. If we build a wall around Brock, he's going to the Hall of Fame. Keep Puni. Get a mauler center that you can develop. I'd love to get the a point where 3rd and 3 or less is an automatic. This is also no disrespect to Nelson.

Puni is going to be the lynchpin of the future for this OL in the same way Nelson has been at Indy. He is not going to be trade bait in hope that he can be replaced at a lower cost.

If you look at the breakdown I listed in the post above, you can see Puni is right where he should be in comparison to the rest of the league. In fact, we might say he is a bargain.

Not sure if we can get quin, but I don't think Puni will be easy to keep either

most of our past OL received bigger deals than what we wanted to pay.. Tomelson, Banks, McGlinch and Moore

Puni is a keeper
Whine, b itch, moan complain. The 49ers don't spend draft capital on offensive line. Tom Brady blah blah blah.

We finally nail it on an offensive linemen and want to trade him. Derp.

I saw Buckner and Kinlaw each made plays this weekend.

Hell, even Colby has stepped up this year. McKivitz is a McGlinchey clone.

I've always been underwhelmed by Brendel but the line has not given up a sack through 4 tames.

Pay the Big Uglies!

Pay the Big Uglies!

Let me overwhelm you a bit on Brendel.

He is the #5 overall Center in the league. In Pass Protection, he is tied for #2 place with Tyler Linderbaum, the $27,000,000/yr man with the Raiders.

That's exactly it, Puni is a keeper. The other guys you listed weren't.

He may get a 2-year extension in the upcoming off-season. He has no more guaranteed money left and is on a series of void years. If he finishes this year strong, we may see it, although there is some young talent on the roster.

EDIT: I take it back. see my post below.

He is playing great right now, but its still early in the season. I'd like to see back to back high level play seasons before giving him a bigger contract(if we were to pay him).
