Why not include Montana's stats against the Bears in the 1988 NFC CG and against the Giants in the regular season in 1990?

Montana's defense during the 1989-1990 back to back Superbowl seasons were never lower than five. In other words his defenses were outstanding on top of him being the Goat.

Comparing any QB stats from the 80s and 90s with stats from QBs playing today is silly. The game has changed dramatically since those days. Not just the way the offenses play but the rules have been changed to favor the passing game.

Go back and look at the passing leaders 40 years ago and you see completion percentages are lower back then and passer ratings are all about 10 points lower than those of today. The best QBs of that era wouldn't be in the top 10 or even top 20 compared to today if you just went by stats. Montana's career passer rating of 92 and completion % of 63 wouldn't even be close to the numbers many NFL QBs put up today.

As Shanahan pointed out, things in the NFL rarely work as cleanly as you want them to. Defenders disrupt passing lanes, protections break down, and receivers don't always get open on schedule. That's where a quarterback needs more than knowledge of the offense. He needs the ability to process what's happening and make the right decision under pressure.

Purdy has shown he can do that throughout his career, and Shanahan believes he's never been better. "He's at the top of his game right now," Shanahan said. "And that's saying a lot because I think he's played at a high level since he started."
