100 out of 100 GMs in the 80s woulda taken Marino over Montana, Manning over Brady in the '00s… who cares

Agreed ,meaningless but based on actual performance not speculation Josh is the better athlete and qb. That's was my point. I just wanted to keep it honest. You put Josh on this team and we are polishing trophies for years to come. Then again, with our injuries we probably wouldn't.

Steve Young was the penultimate athlete - good arm good mobility, in a word Athletic. Who won more Superbowls? A spindly QB that looked like a kicker - named Joe. The fact that your QB is an athlete is important, but the QB's job is more neck up than neck down.

Montana also has consistently better defenses, something Young and Allen both would love to benefit from. (Purdy too).

Steve also ran into an all time dynasty. Joe was on the all time dynasty.

Sure if you want to stat pad against horrible teams

lol brother he just dropped a 2/2 TD game against one of the best defenses in the league week 1 including the game winning TD with under 2 minutes left on the road.

As I said, we can give Brock his praise for what he's accomplished without putting down other QBs. It looks extra silly given how Josh Allen has played so far.
One of the best? That was last year

plus, if the Texans had an offense the bills are 1-1

Jalen Hurts might be the best QB in football currently.

Of course.

Like you mentioned, it's week 2. Not thinking Super Bowl anyway regardless of the week 1 performance. Long way to go.
Tier 1

1a Allen
1b Purdy

That's it.
Jimmy G "can be himself on the Rams", tells me all I really need to know about Jimmy G

Allen has 10 games now with 2 passing TDs and 2 rushing TDs. The next closest is Steve Young with 4. That's a pretty big gap. I noticed last night that Allen doesn't seem to always have that easy pass when he's under stress. He has to try and find someone or just outrun the pass rusher. Kyle's offense always seems to have someone open short for those dump offs when the QB is rushed. CMC or a TE in the flat. Someone is almost always open.

True but that OL of his....Purdy has never had anything close to it. So it kinda balances out imo

The line may be a little better but Allen doesn't have good WRs. The Niners have much better receivers including TE. Even with the good O line Allen was forced to move lot because nobody was open downfield.

Allen has DJ Moore and Pro Bowl TE Dalton Kincaid, not to mention All-Pro James Cook. Lets not act like these are chumps. And why is it, when Purdy has good players around him, it's the supporting cast the reason Purdy is good. And when a QB like Allen has good players around him, it's all Allen? lol

Allen has put up big numbers with guys like Shakir, Gabe Davis and is making Josh Palmer look dangerous. He can put up numbers with anyone at this point. Like ANY QB, the better the skill players the better the results.

Reality is Allen will never get to show what he could do or couldn't do playing with Shanahan(at least we better hope not) so Brock is our guy and we should hope he's turning Kyle's offense with whomever we have out there into a great offense that helps us win lots of football games. So far he's done that.

Personally I'm going to appreciate what Josh Allen is doing but I won't worry about him until we have to play him. I'd love to see us play him this season.

For me it's wins and losses - because a QB affects the whole teams performance. So, just focusing on the post season - Brock's winning percentage in the post season is a bit better than Josh Allen's. That's the difference (for me) between Josh and Brock. As the good 49er fans here have said, both QB's are elite, but when it counts, it seems that Brock is better.

I can't go with the wins and losses because the QB can play great and the defense can end up losing the game. We've seen that happen a couple times haven't we. Football is too much of a team game to say give too much credit to the QB for the win. You need to look at more than wins and more than stats. It's one reqason Idon't like ranking QBs. Physical abilities are easy to see but there is just too much that goes into being a QB. Different teammates. Different coaches with different systems. Different opponents. When comparing stats with QBs from a different era it gets even harder.

All I know for sure is Purdy is more than capable of executng the offense that Kyle wants him to run. That is job one for any QB.

Disagree. The QB affects the *entire* team. If the QB isn't converting 3rd downs - it gasses the defense (for example). If he is converting 3rd downs, it essentially rests the defense. That's just *one* example of how a QB can affect the entire team. It's indeed a team game, but which player touches the football the most and affects the team? The QB. If you, as a head coach, don't get your franchise level QB, you are fired. Example - Saleh, fired versus Demeco and Stroud, still employed as a HC. That's how important a franchise QB is to a HC and his offensive system and to the entire team. That's why desperate bottom feeding teams are always drafting QB's round 1, pick 1 most every time. Why? because that one player can change your entire team in one go.

So basically Jimmy G is one the greatest QBs in NFL history since he has one the best W/L %

Lol

Jared Goff is a good example of a QB that wins a lot and has good stats. He holds some records lke most consecutive games with 75% completion. However he doesn't rank high in most polls of top QBs. He just doesn't jump out when you watch him play.

Exactly. Obviously winning is the most important thing, but you can still be good QB and not win a ton bc of your team/HC (Stafford with the Lions).

One of the main reasons Kyle went and drafted Trey was Jimmy's durability issues, not so much his QB skills. Brock's a lot better than Jimmy in the QB skill area.

One of the reasons Brock is not considered top five in a lot of non-49er fans eyes is that he's never *won* a Superbowl. One of the reasons Joe is considered legendary is because he won four 🏆's.

So win/loss percentage is a valid guage of a QB's skills, especially at the highest levels of competition.

Agree, and I'll just add that to win Superbowls, you have to have a superbowl level defense. Meaning you better have a great pass defense. Purdy and Jimmy never had that, in my opinion.

Heh, I wouldn't put Allen that high. Allen's never been to a Superbowl. Purdy has. Here's where I stand.

Mahomes 1a
Purdy 1b

Not really. Of the 5-6 QBs routinely in the elite conversation, only 2 have actually won a Super Bowl. A SB win would elevate him in some fans/media members minds… because they can't separate team success from individual ability. Again, Jalen Hurts is a great example of this. Great win percentage in both the reg season and playoffs, including a SB win. Nobody, outside of a small minority of people, would have him on equal footing with the game's best QBs.

If you're confused about this, explore other teams' fan sites, especially those teams who have successful QB's that aren't routinely in the 'elite' conversation. QB's like Purdy, Dak, Goff, Love, Hurts, Maye etc. Look at who the fans of those players compare them to… it will always be some combination of Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc.

For sure, a winning percentage without a bit more context could be misleading. But winning is still winning. It's the most important stat in all of football. For context, a win in the playoffs, again my opinion, tells you more about a player and a team than a win in the regular season.

In the playoffs - QB's are not only facing top of the line defenses, but top of the line opposing offenses also.
