Playmaker.

Generate Automatic Purdy-related Response (aka "The Steven Ruiz" routine)

1. It's All Scheme

2. It's All Down To The Supporting Cast (aka Ricky Pearsall on one leg, Kittle on one hamstring, and CMC on 35 touches a minute, or thereabouts)

3. Oooh, Justin Herbert, oooh, doesn't he throw a pretty spiral, oooh what a man (excuse me, I need a private room for a moment).

Yes. Draftniks liked him. That's the reason.

For the record, I like Burrow, and I don't think he should be judged by his performances this year considering what a nasty injury turf toe is. And I am totally on his side if he's fed up with playing for a useless team like the Bungles. But I couldn't care less about draftniks' opinions, measurables, and what nerds think make a good player.
To wrap up my Purdy posts for today (I do need to work for a living), I will wonder aloud once again. I thought you Americans loved rags-to-riches, triumph against adversity, nobody-believed-in-you, Cinderella-never-turning-into-a-pumpkin, victory through sheer determination and effort, stories. What's more fitting in these narratives than a little guy drafted last in the draft who looks like he needs his mum's permission to stay up for a night game, much less start in it? Not just Mr Irrelevant, but Mr Everyone? If this were a daytime soap character we would say he was a bit too unlikely even for the format. And we lucked into him?

It is unbelievable how butt-hurt the entire nerd&draftnik community (everyone is in a "community" these days) is over misjudging this guy, that four years down the line they are STILL willing him to actually turn into a pumpkin. I marvel at how enthusiastically they pick apart his miscues and how readily they dismiss his successes. Are people's identities really so tied-up to the stupid parlour game that is the mock draft? Seriously, what's the big deal? OK, so you guys were off by about 200 spots in this case. Is this such a crushing blow to your manhood?

What happened to a player just being good??? Brock is a good QB period. Brock is capable of winning a SB. If fans or media want to knock Purdy let them. As a 49ers fan I don't understand why you would want to but it doesn't matter anymore. Brock is our QB1 so deal with it. I remember Terry Bradshaw trying to knock Joe Montana by giving more credit to his weapons, the west coast system, Walsh etc. than Joe. By the way Terry you had Swann, Stallworth, Harris and Bleir with Chuck Noll as your leader, so the same could have been said about you. Who knows maybe they did.

I don't understand why people feel the need to try and discredit player's achievements other than said players not fitting into certain people's idea of what a good player looks like. Maybe some people don't like Brock because of what he stands for or maybe it's because they were wrong about him and his ability to start. Some people hate the 49ers and don't want them to have a franchise QB capable of winning a SB. Maybe it's Brock's arm or height they don't like or some could be upset because they can't explain why he's so good. It could be a combination of those things I just mentioned.

Either way fans and media trying to qualify why a player is good by taking away from that player's abilities is nothing new. It's been happening since I started watching football and will continue to happen long after I stop. I will say regarding Brock it's reached a new level. Almost like people dislike him personally as if they knew him. Some of the things I read on this site and hear on the TV/radio are ridiculous and mean spirited. Brock will get knocked for something the best QBs in the game have done yet those same critics will let others slide or make excuses for the players they support. The hypocrisy is insane.

Personally I love Brock as our QB1. Brock Purdy is a risk taker and a playmaker. I appreciated and supported Alex Smith very much under Jim Harbaugh but Alex protected the football almost too much. It was hard for Alex to make plays because he wasn't willing to turn the ball over. There is a line you need to be able to walk as a QB and Brock is mostly on the right side of that line.

Brock Purdy has had some really bad games. The prime time game against Baltimore probably being the worst. But so what?!? You want to watch bad QB play watch 1989 week 2 49ers at Bucs. One of the worst games I ever saw Joe or any QB play. Ugh, baaad. Btw that TB game was followed up by one of the greatest games I ever saw Joe play, the next week at the Vet. That's what good QBs do, they bounce back. Purdy also went toe to toe with Mahomes in the SB and was very close to the W. Purdy couldn't get the job done that day but he showed me he's capable of getting it done.

This year's playoffs will be another step in the maturation process of Brock Purdy. With the 49ers defense in shambles and transition and CMC not running the football as well as in the past Brock Purdy will have to carry the load offensively. This will be a challenge behind this OL and without a true #1 WR. Brock will have to find and walk that fine line between making plays and not turning it over to a point it puts the team in too big of a hole to climb out of. A big challenge indeed but one I believe Brock will be up for.

Unfortunately the Purdy critics will never go away. Brock could win back to back SBs and those critics will lessen but not leave entirely. They'll make more excuses on why Brock won them. There will be those that say if the 49ers want to 3-peat they need to replace Brock. I really hope they get a chance to make their excuses.

There's a difference between being a Purdy critic and just pointing out that he's good but not great. You said it in your first sentence. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't know how anyone can say Brock is terrible and I don't think many feel that he is. That doesn't mean he doesn't have limitations. Most QBs do. Being overly critical of Purdy is silly but so is trying to make him more than what he is.

But they're an inevitable part of the game, so what are you going to do. The trick is to do the best you can to minimize them. Unfortunately, there are some fans who never forget and seem to take it as some kind of personal affront. Preston Riley, Roger Craig, Kyle Williams -- who had two, Jaquiski Tartt for missing one, Jimmy G. for missing Sanders, and probably a few more that I've forgotten. It's just football.

Actually dont know who Preston Riley is. Do remember Craigs Fumble and Kyle Williams there in NFCCG . Im just one of those Fans that dont like Turnovers. Thats it. With how the 49ers D Is so Patched worked and hanging by a string. Yes Turn Overs are very critical at any point of the Game

No fans "like" turnovers. Cmon now.

?
So, with all the "pure progression" talk going around I took a pretty deep dive into it from the film with Rob Guerrera today on our weekly show. It starts at about the 25 min mark, I think. Kyle asks Brock to do just about all of it. Pure progression, split-field coverage read, pick-a-side reads, conflict reads, vertical stretch reads.
