Right, and no taking plays off. If you're open, he just might throw to you (sometimes to the chagrin of Shanahan, hehe).
There was that play last year where Aiyuk never expected it to come his way so he totally never saw the pass come deep near him. Can't imagine after Purdy yelled at him about it and seeing it in the film room he'll ever do that again.
Oh yeah, I remember that. Purdy thought he had the TD! Aiyuk wasn't accustomed to the QB looking for those (not meant as a jab at Jimmy, just wasn't his tendency).

Which play are you talking about? The one against seattle that Aiyuk dropped in the endzone?

No, I don't remember who it was against. Purdy looked for Aiyuk down the field, but Aiyuk quit running.

Shanahan has to be on tilt that this went incomplete. Unsure why Aiyuk stopped running. Don't want to fault Purdy too much for not hitting Deebo. What's better Deebo 15 yards downfield with YAC opportunity or Aiyuk 40 yards downfield? Both are good options. pic.twitter.com/U2kgqjzwBQ

lets get it Purdy! Try and break this record 😍🤘💦
I hate how people act like Montana was a dink and dunker. The west coast offense wasn't JUST short passes. It just replaced a lot of runs with short passes. They attacked down the field when it was there, and you could see it in these clips.
That's exactly what folks who didn't like the niners used to say about him. I believe the term game manager was first used on Joe, and the dink and dunk label as well. I remember folks leading up to the 84 Superbowl trying to say the Dolphins were gonna whip the Niners because Dan Marino was the better qb, and Joe was a dink and dunk game manager. The media was hyping Marino because of the lighning release and cannon arm. Leading to the famous photo of Walsh laying on the floor in the locker room giving the speech about how are we ever gonna beat the Dolphins.
The West Coast offense spread teams horizontally, not to replace runs, because the niners were a top tier running team every year they were good, but to create room for the yards after the catch. That's how Jerry was able to turn those slants and sluggo routes into long touchdowns. It was a thing of beauty to watch back in those days. I feel lucky, I think the team went 18 straight seasons without a losing record. It was a great time to be a Niner fan.
