agreed; there is a reason for this but the mods won't let us discuss the issue openly on here for good reason
Oh FFS, the reason is because the guy was the last pick in the draft and people are playing the odds that he had a short burst of success when no one had any significant tape on him.
If he keeps playing at a high level and even wins a SB then people will be all over his nuts but until then he has to prove that what we saw last year wasn't a mirage.
And no one is getting fired if Purdy indeed proves out be a stud. Even the 49ers initially were ready to let him go to UDFA before changing their mind late. Just like the Patriots had zero clue that Brady would be anything worthwhile which is why they waited not just until the 6th round to take him, but making him the third player they took in that 6th round.
Sometimes you take a flyer on a guy and it pays off in a huge way. That's just how it goes.
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on the bold. There were 8 quarterbacks drafted before Purdy and 261 picks.
If the Steelers—who drafted TWO quarterbacks in that draft—end up with only a meh QB and someone who they instantly cut, when they could've had a franchise QB both times, it's going to be a big black eye on a front office that is known for having a robust drafting process. At least
someone is going to be held responsible if it plays out that way.
Everything else I agree with, and of course my statement/example is highly contingent on Purdy turning into the guy and Kenny Pickett fading after a few years, but it's a bold statement I stand behind.
