The question is who is closer to being pro ready next season? Mac Jones is the right answer, but since most of you talent scouts in this forum think he is not worthy of pick #2 or #3 we will excuse him for this discussion. So the Jets could surprise everybody on draft day and leave the 49ers with a choice between Zach Wilson, Trey Lance and Mac Jones! You never know what's going to happen on draft day! 🙏

If we prefer Wilson over Fields why wouldn't the Jets?

We're not the Jets.

Saleh and LaFleur may prefer a different QB that Shanahan. It's very possible that LaFleur wants to add his own stuff to his play calling.

Because by year 3 Mac Jones will be nowhere near the QB's both Fields and Lance will be. This is why I hope to god Jones is not the pick because this is not just about the next couple of years, It's about the next decade. They traded up to get their QB of the future, Not the present. I am sick of hear the media talk about how Jones is a better fit because he is more pro-ready now. I didn't know the Niners traded two future 1st RD picks to draft a QB who will be better for 1 year.

Why not? What are you basing this off of?

Don't want to put words in the guy's mouth, but I am guessing based off of physical limitations and low ceiling (Jones is already closer to his lower ceiling than the other two guys with higher ceilings). Just a guess on my part regarding what is being said here.

All the conjecture is pointless. It's in-bounds to say Fields and Lance have higher ceilings. But Jones could be a Drew Brees level surgeon. That's just as unlikely to happen as Fields being Russell Wilson or Trey Lance being Steve Young/John Elway. Most likely one of these three will be good and the other two marginal.

What appears known is the reaction from the fan base. A Wilson / Fields / Lance pick provides Shanahan / Lynch with better PR cover. A Jones pick immediately starts the hot seat conversation. The essentially narrowed the timeline on Jones' learning. He'll get less accepted time to learn behind Jimmy and will need to prove more faster than Fields or Lance.
How does one pick a QB?

Arm strength
Accuracy
Mobility
QB/NFL IQ, aka "football smarts"
What is his track record? Did he play in big conference (SEC, BIG 12, ) or in small school competition?
Injury Hx and durability
Leadership...is he or isn't he team leader.
Size, Strength...ie, will he hold up to NFL beatings...this is a question re: Wilson, specifically.
How many yrs a starter? The covid yr makes this a tough one.
is he a known film study guy?
How fast does he learn?
Can he read Ds...and if so, how fast? How good is he at progressions?
Can he throw guys open...or does he need to have his target open before he throws?
He's gifted, athletically, but just HOW gifted? Mahomes-like or Goff-like?
How do you rate him with lesser talents around him....Fields, for one but Mac especially. They both had great Ds and terrific players all around them.
Asked another way, how would Lance have done at Bama or Ohio St.? How would Fields and Mac do with not much talent and no D around them?
Can he learn Kyle's system, but still keep his gunslinger attitude?
Can he be a Brady like escape artist? This is different from being mobile.
How soon could he be ready to start? Or, will he take 2 yrs to actually be better than JG now? If that's the case, unh oh....
Will his new team put a top notch OL in front of him...or will he have to accept a Zone Blocking team isn't known for protecting the Qb? To date, anyway.

Answer these questions and you will be a lot closer to knowing who Kyle/JL/ Peters pick.

I'm a pessimist when it comes to the 49ers and high draft picks. This franchise seems to be cursed at QB. And twice over the last decade we were convinced our savior had finally arrived, (Kap/JImmy) and their star faded fast.

I personally am hoping for Fields...because even if he never develops into a great passer, at least he'll have his legs. I think he can become a Lamar Jackson level QB.

Mac Jones....how is he better than Josh Rosen or Jimmy G?

Fields is a much better passer than Lamar was coming out of college. I personally believe Fields has all the tools to be one of the best QBs in the game with the right coach and system, like Shanahan.

coming out of college lamar and fields arent even in the same universe as runners and Fields is a better passer coming out . The copmarision doesnt make sense to me i think there is 0 chance Fields will be the threat lamar is as a runner
Since the Niners made the trade the media seems to have spent the last 2 weeks saying Jones is the pick. With 18 days to go before the draft, don't be surprised if the opinions swing back to the smokescreen theory. All it takes is one or two saying their sources are telling them that Fields is really the guy and the predictions will shift. They have to have something to write about the next 2 weeks. Everyone will be trying to find a new scoop..

Let's say Jones was at Kentucky and Fields was at Illinois. Fields is still a 5 star QB and Jones is still a 3 star QB. Give them similar seasons 25 TDs, 10 INTs, 65%. Mac Jones is probably going in round 4-5 and Fields is still going in round 1. Lance would be harder to judge. He wasn't seen as a QB by major schools coming out of HS. But he definitely has the physical talent. He probably runs less but has to pass more. Which he didn't have to do at NDS. His draft profile doesn't change much still a QB with upside, though probably not the sky high upside he has now since most likely passing more might show more flaws in his accuracy.

Just because he didn't do it as much as Lamar doesn't mean he wasn't as good.

You cannot logically say that Lance and Fields will be much better QBs at some point in the future but Mac Jones will never be better than he is now. That is speculation, not logic.

Im having a hard time understanding how he thinks Mac Jones is worth the capital we gave up to move up to 3.

This would be the 1 time I wouldn't mind Jed doing Jerry Jones things and go with the bigger name/highlights guy and putting his foot down. S**t I want John to have balls and fight with kyle if he truly wants Jones. It's just beyond belief how Kyle can literally believe Jones is better and worth the 3rd pick. Even at 12 I can stomach it and I don't think much of Jones but I'll accept very cautiously if we stayed at 12. Like another poster said, Kyle is the 1 coach who thinks Mac is worth a top 3 pick smh

Soooo you want the owner or gm to tell the head coach who they are gonna draft & to deal with it??
lol

Great strategy. I don't see any resentment blowing up on that scenario! Lol

I think that's his point. Person is pro-Fields and complimenting on how he isn't as wreckless with his running style as Lamar is.
