Illinois. Land of the Garoppolo.

In the football building, there was a small, empty office at the end of the hallway. Rutter doesn't remember if he was given it or asked for it; he simply made it his own.

For 15-20 hours a week, Rutter would go to his office and watch film. He'd bring teammates to help them understand the ins and outs of the opponents to find strengths and weaknesses.

That's how Rutter elevated his game during his final two years at North Central. Thorne said the quarterback "fell in love with watching film."

For Rutter to show off that attribute, he needs to be on a team. Without visits to team facilities, he doesn't get to go on the whiteboard and break down plays. He didn't get a combine invite. He got to talk to teams at his Pro Days, but scouts will have to rely on what they see from Rutter, and what they hear from his coaches, to trust that his film habits are enough to set him apart.

On the field, Thorne believes that Rutter's calling card is his accuracy. As a senior, Rutter completed 71 percent of his passes.

"As an offensive coach, an offensive coordinator, a quarterback coach, if they're not accurate — they could throw a ball through a wall, they could throw a ball 80 yards, but if it doesn't land on their target where it needs to land, when it needs to land, it doesn't do you any good," Thorne said. "Broc, from day one, has been incredibly accurate. His timing is outstanding, and that goes back to his film study."
