Finally: The #Redskins have agreed to terms on a trade of LT Trent Williams to the #49ers, per me, @TomPelissero & @MikeGarafolo. With today's 4 pm ET deadline looming, the 49ers are opting not to exercise the $10 million option bonus in Trent Williams' contract, per sources. Williams' salary cap number now will grow to close to $47 million, but the team is not overly concerned about it and it still is… pic.twitter.com/uvCahjbNYW

Depends how much of a pay cut Trent is willing to take. We don't know any of the proposed numbers other than what he's due to make this season.

It's just that if they were trying to keep him wouldn't they pay out that bonus? It's sounds like they're withholding it because they're in a middle of a trade? Maybe I'm just confusing myself!!! lol

They want him to take a pay cut. There's likely a hangup over how much guaranteed money he'd get over a 1-2 year extension.

To me, the only real news here is this 10m bonus wasn't actually a hard deadline, and now they have more time to negotiate.

I don't even try to pretend that I understand these contracts and negotiations. I just wait until they anounce an agreement or say the player is being traded or released.

I doubt that many of us would be able to understand all the complexities in todays contracts. Gone are the days when players came in and signed a simple contract that said I agree to play for X amount. With lawyers involved they have to earn their pay by making everything complex. Every move they make now is for legal or monetary reasons.
