Good news!

Nice good deal.
4 guys with big games.: plus 1

Walter #33, small in stature, but goes 200 lbs. supposedly came from "walk on" day . Know nothing about him, but the kid reminds me of
Brieda and his walk on appearance. Great runner, hits the holes, follows blocks, doesn't go down , gets extra yards, good moves. Heady
Young player. Best player for us last nite.

Julian Taylor...big nite, fought hard, was near or at the ball all nite. Tough guy to handle for OL. REally had big nite.

Toran....didn't even know he was on team. Sure he played against #2s and #3s, but the guy looked good on our pathetically thin OL.
He looks to make the 53. And right now could be our first OL off the bench. But we'll see after more snaps.

Damontre Moore... man he kicked azz and took names. Again, played against 2s and 3s, but kid had a great game. #3 DE? Sure looks that way.

Hurd....only caught 3 balls, but two for TDs.. could he be the RZ or EZ guy we have needed for 5 yrs? And here i wanted a starter DB with that 3rd pick in draft. After last nite, i am fully on board with Hurd as a huge piece in our puzzle. We won't know for sure about RZ/EZ until season starts, but initial results are VERY favorable. The guy is a horse, and that first pass NEVER should ahve been a TD. But Hurd just carried two guys into the EZ with him while fighting to hold onto the ball. Magnificent. The second TD...LB never had a prayer of staying with Hurd. He looks to be the REAL DEAL. And screw that ""must have a starter DB with our 3rd pick in draft". We done just fine. My guess is he is also going to be another chain mover along with Kittle on 3rd downs. How great is that that we have not one guaranteed 3rd down mover ...but now two. We'll have to see more of the same, but i really love the guy to be great for both RZ/EZ and also 3rd down.

Along with kittle, stopping us on 3rd down just got a lot harder. And getting us into RZ/EZ looks to have gotten a lot easier.

Special category: most reformed person on team:

Saleh. He had himself a good nite, and thanks also to Kocurek and Woods. Between them with saleh calling the D sets, we had more blitzing than i recall seeing all last yr. Tip of the hat to Mr. Conservative... i hope this means he has broken out of his shell. Whether it was wide 9s and results of that , or run blitzing or pass blitzing....point is he was blitzing...and it seemed like we saw more of that than we saw in all of last yr put together. So good on you , DC Saleh. Please keep it up.
Definitely have mixed feelings after that. Great to rookie WRs in action. Nice to see our D looking better much of the game. But frustrating to see some of last year's short comings continue. General sloppiness being the main one. Not taking care of the football... PENALTIES... poor pass blocking... weak links getting picked on at DB... hoping those things get ironed out, but am concerned seeing them again. Those things have killed us all season long, every season under Shan.

In no particular order, here are some guys I thought showed well:

Greenlaw
Hurd
Tim Harris
Demontre Moore
Walter
Julian Taylor

So... am I the only one that really wants to see a Pettis, Deebo, Hurd, Kittle, Breida unit on the field together?

The home grown squad... and possibly our best squad.

Came in with a depleted roster and had more injuries. Lost Coleman. The whole league is plagued with injuries. Bad week/weekend...

In other (bad) news, a pedophile on suicide watch apparently was still able to commit suicide in his jail cell... Drake passed away

WALTER was my MVP against the Cowboys.

Is that the guy that averaged 3 yards per carry?
I'm rewatching the game this morning and I am only 5 minutes in, but I have to say this. Greenlaw is a starter, period. You can see him watch and react. In fact, the final defensive snap of the first drive ended with Day batting a ball up in the air and Prescott catching his own pass. However, if Day hadn't batted the ball, there is a good chance that Greenlaw intercepts the ball, because Dak was targeting the TE and Greenlaw had read it and was going to be in front of the TE because he was baiting the QB the whole way. I'm amazed because this kid was drafted for depth, but he was the most instinctual player on the field by far.

Also, on a complete side note, can we not teach DB's to look for the ball? I mean, Moseley was in great position and could have had an easy INT if he just looked back!

QB: Nick Mullens, C.J. BeatHard & Wilton Speight

LT: Shon Coleman & Christian DiLauro
LG: Ross Reynolds & Wesley Johnson
C: Ben Garland & Dillon Day

RT: Justin Skule & Daniel Brunskill

Defensive Personnel:
5T/W9: Jullian Taylor, Kentavius Street
2i: D.J. Jones, Jay Bromley & Jordan Thompson
3T: Solomon Thomas & Kevin Givens
W9: Damontre Moore & Jeremiah Valoaga
SAM: LaRoy Reynolds & Mark Nzeocha
MIKE: Dre Greenlaw & David Mayo
WILL: Elijah Lee & Azeez Al-Shaair
RCB: D.J. Reed & Tim Harris
SCB: Emmanuel Moseley
LCB: Dontae Johnson & Greg Mabin
FS: Tarvarius Moore, Adrian Colbert, Tyree Robinson & Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
SS: Marcell Harris; Antone Exum

What and who I'll be paying close attention to:

1. Defensive alignment. Predominantly wide 9 or Saleh-ball (big base, big nickel) or mix and match
2. Arby's in the passing game
3. QB progressions
4. OL depth and Garland at C
5. Slot/F...big and small slot personnel now
6. Wishnowsky (oy, oy, oy!) and the gunners. With his hang time, is Mostert a luxury now and not a necessity (Pinion)? Kick returners
7. Rock-and-Roll safeties. More than just Cover 3
8. Specific players in bold above

1. Confirmed. W9 all day every day. Only gave up 50 yards rushing and lots of QB pressures, hits, sacks. Lots of interchangeables inside...even saw Day + Jones. Taylor and Street too. Endless combos inside at 2i and 3T now. Damontre Moore looked pretty good as a 3rd ER. The 2 ends are pass rushers exclusively now. Only fails I saw where from the LB's not filling the gaps or overrunning them (Elijah Lee) and contain...their RB had a spin move and had a huge lane to run outside after it.
2. Arby's caught everything and were targeted a lot.
3. Progressions looked fine but mostly Hurd, Deebo and Dwelley were the first, and open, options.
4. No Garland but Wesley Johnson looked really nice at C. That's encouraging as he'll push Garland to be the starting C week 1 if Richburg is not in football shape. The rest of the depth looked poor as expected. Lots of big hits and pressures but solid in run blocking. Ross Reynolds looks like he had potential but is trying out at LG...not RG like we hoped. Day also looked solid at C. Coleman lost for the year.
5. Safe to say we used a heavy mix of Dwelley, James and Hurd/Deebo from the slot. Take note. It'll be like that in the regular season too.
6. Solid start for Wish. Like all rookies, needs to work on consistency. The hang time was solid but not long enough to no longer need an excellent gunner. In short, Mostert is still a lock and certainly needed.
7. It seemed pretty cover 3 vanilla to me. Moore as the single high and Harris in the box. Exum was everywhere and laying the wood...deep, intermediate, short. Keeper.
8. Already discussed ad nauseam.

Into the second quarter now. I've continued to watch Greenlaw. This kid is going to be pretty good, but he does the common rookie thing of thinking the first look is the correct look. He bites on play action every time. A little coaching and some experience will iron that out, but he will be a liability until he fixes this part of his game.

Other notes, 77 on the d-line jump out. I think Taylor 77 is our Michael Bennet. He has the same body type and seems to be built with a lower center of gravity than most people. He can push back a double team every time. He is also one of the quickest off the snap. Routinely behind the line before other players are out of their stance. Also quick shout out to 95 Street. This kid has flashed a couple times already. Faster than I was expecting, and violent contact.

Before I watched the game, I had read a few "best or worst of" articles. I have to say, people that are putting Pettis on the worst of list didn't watch the same game I have so far. He has been targeted twice, both times he is open by more than 4 yards or more, but both times the QB has not gotten the ball past defenders that are in front of him. The first ball was tipped by players that were 10 yards in front of him, and the second pass was picked by players that were 8 yards in front. A little more height on those passes and they are easy completions. Also, on the play that James caught a 1st down on the sideline, Pettis was open on a double move in-route, but the QB threw the ball before looking his direction. I'll keep watching to see if maybe he starts failing, but from what I see, if the qb can get the ball to the kid, he is getting open.
At the half, I have to say Street and Taylor keep popping up. One play by Street that stopped a run behind the line was a pure Justin Smith strong arm down the line beauty. He needs a little work on getting off the line quick, or maybe he is getting set late. But he has the physical abilities to do some great things.

On the offense, I want to say I love Kendrick Bourne, his energy is wonderful, but dude....you dropped an easy one that your QB got WRECKED getting to you. (Mullens by the way), and then a few plays later you are the lead WR blocking a well setup screen and you just stopped. I don't want to be you when you go through the tape with the team. That was a low effort play that could have been the difference between a 5 and 20 yard pickup. Much better on the Deebo reverse, blocked his man all the way down the field.

Hurd and Samuel are now in the game, and even before a pass was thrown to them, I notice them. Hurd stands out because he is HUGE! They are both very explosive off the line, and the first time the CB's pressed Deebo you can almost see the surprise when Deebo smashed him off the line. I love what they bring to this team. A mix of finesse and power in our WR. Taylor and Pettis can get open 1 on 1, and Hurd and Samuel will make those tough catches in tight spaces. Also, I'll mention Dwelley real quick. I don't think he is going to light up the world, but he has really good hands and a good body positioning. He is a more conventional receiving TE. He doesn't have the violent quickness that Kittle has. He doesn't play angry and have RAC ability. But he is going to convert a few 3rd downs by just feeling out a zone.

O-line, Skule hasn't had much written about him that I've seen, but he opened some big holes on the 2 plays before Hurd's TD. He needs to get in the gym though. He looks like an out of shape TE, but he seems slippery, as he gets to the second level block consistently.
