Did we make the right decision selecting Patrick WIllis over Adam Carriker + David Harris?

Yes, no question at all - anyone who disagrees needs to have a visit from Murray Goldberg....

He was actually all-pro 6x, 5x 1st team. He missed the first team all-pro by one vote to Jon Beason in 2008 but was nearly unanimous the next year as 49/50 votes went to him. If he hadn't suffered a groin injury in 2013 he probably would've made all-pro that season as well, considering he still amassed 104 tackles and started the season out slow because of a fractured hand in training camp, then the groin injury in week 4.

Even with his abridged career, he should still make the HOF eventually, IMO. While I don't think he'll be a first ballot HOF player, he should still make it in. There are guys who played longer who didn't accomplish near what he did who are in the HOF already. He also changed the way MLB's were seen in the NFL.

If you remember, before P. Willy your prototypical MLB was a Brian Urlacher or Ray Lewis or Takeo Spikes(more in body type and style) type of player. They were big guys, who were faster than DE's but slower than anyone else. Willis introduced speed to the position. No team had ever had a MLB with the kind of speed that Willis had. I think we all remember the game when he ran a receiver down from behind his rookie year. After he came on the scene you saw teams valuing MLB's with speed more than size or power. It opened the door for guys like Luke Keuchly who were considered, "undersized" but with great speed to get a shot. If you look at the top MLB's in the game the past few years, Bowman, Keuchly, Shazier, Wagner - all those guys are considered great MLB's because of traits that are similar to what P. Willis introduced into the game.

He was a special player to watch and it sucks so bad that his career was cut short.(seriously, my wife was worried about me the day I found out I was bummed out and could hardly talk all day long). But, he was the kind of player that we'll tell our kids about. When they talk about a great LB in a few years that they think is great, we'll talk about Patrick Willis and how great he was. He was our only shining light on a bad team for many years.
