To Spend or Not to Spend

I'm pretty stoked that we have (it seems) a smart / sharp duo in Shanny & Lynch. I don't believe they'll be ridiculous and careless with the spending, but I always wanted them to go after a few of the better talents out there (w/out over paying too much)... Lynch even stated they will be busy in FA

Since most of our roster (prior to FA) was mediocre, we're going to need playmaker, impactful players / vets... Saleh can really use the help.

The most important question in FA is "who fits our scheme?" You don't go after some guy just because he's a big name or he did well in someone else's system. You go after players who fit your system. What the extra cap space gives you is a free hand. If the right guy is out there, you can afford to pay whatever it takes to sign him.

Some guys who I think fit the scheme really well:

Brian Hoyer - QB
Pierre Garcon - WR
Zach Brown - ILB
Patrick DiMarco - FB

Would rather spend a late round draft pick on a FB. He'll cost nothing for four years.

what about Poe?? is he a possibility

I'll take Tony Jefferson Kenny Stills and some second tier guys for competition and quality depth. Might even take a run at Josh Gordon if his head is right. Change of scenery low risk high rewards.

Yes to all. I'd add Schaub and give him and Hoyer each a 2-year deal. It'll signal to Cousins that we're waiting for him next year. Worst case, they're a stopgap while Kyle explores alternate options.

I agree that they shouldn't go crazy with the spending, but if I were the 49ers front office, I would spend the cash to shore up our historically bad defense.

Although they have Earl Mitchell, I would still be in the market for Poe or Hankins. Because of the caliber of running backs we will be going against for the next several years, I'd like it if we had a dominant run stuffer. Now Glenn Dorsey does fill that roll, sort of, but we can do better.

I also would like to bring in another inside linebacker. I simply want a capable tackler so that we aren't the worse defense in 49ers history. I think we can cover pass rusher in the draft and I am crossing my fingers that Cleveland does the right thing (for us lol) and passes on Myles Garrett. The effect that Garrett will have on the defense is similar to the effect that people say Alshon Jeffrey would have on the offense, in that it opens things up for everyone.

I honestly don't project a spending frenzy however. Sign Poe or Hankins. Bring in help at linebacker. Sign Brian Hoyer. Bring in a true fullback. Although Jeffrey is the big prize, I have a feeling that we will not meet with him. I think he's a perfect fit, but not so sure we hand out two top level contracts in the same offseason. I think Pierre Garcon is much more likely, even though he isn't a dominating player. I could be surprised though. It's some money, but not that expensive of an offseason. especially if they only sign one tier 1 player.

The thought of Garrett and Buckner in the same front seven is mouth watering. Buckner really started coming into his own the last six games of the season. I began to notice teams adjusting in-game and moving the ball away from his direction. I'm excited about what he can do to build on that in season two. Adding a guy like Garrett would really give us something to believe in as to what this defense could ultimately become again, but this time it's potential game changing core would be much younger and have an opportunity to sustain a high level of defensive play much longer than our last run.

With Earl Mitchell, my expectation of signing a big Fat NT FA is low. I definitely think we need one, and I'm hoping we at least draft one. Some good fat run plugging NTs should be available in later rounds.
