I expect he will be playing the 3 tech as the interior pass rusher. Buckner at the 5 tech. Armstead will be backing up Buckner on the bench.

Really don't see him as a 1 tech since hes not a great run stuffer. Need sign someone else for nose.

Just reading. Also, personally not fond of any NT that isn't Fat (320 ish).

He's going to be a 4-3 dt

We need 2 different 4-3 DTs.
  1. The weak side DT is a penetrating guy who can rush the passer.
  2. The strong side guy is a Fat NT type.
I'm thinking he's being signed to play the weakside, backing up either armstead or buckner. And will see time in our nickel. I don't like the idea of a 300 lb fat NT type guy.
LEO can be filled by Harold or Tank IF we are lucky. At least they played this position in college.

You don't like the idea? So? Some ppl here strongly assume that he was signed to play 1tech.

Leo is a DE, and ifEli or Tank can thrive there, then yeah, that'd be great.

As for DT, getting more talent there is definitely a need. I like the signing. I just don't love the idea of him being relied on to be a Fat NT Type who is controlling the center of the line as a run stuffer.
I doubt Eli and Tank is on this team for 2017.
This signing is just a small drop in the rebuild. This guy is a servicible rotatation player who may or may not make the final roster. If he plays well we keep him . If not we cut him an keep some of the money

Got the 1tech

What are your thoughts on him? Not too familiar other than his position and little things I've seen

No thoughts. I never even heard of him until last week. I might not even be correct that he'll play 1t.

Lmao. Most of us don't know either. I just know he's a run stopper. I hope he can stay healthy as he missed a lot of games the past two seasons. Mitchell had a chance to play for less $$$ with Denver and Seattle. The $$$ makes a huge difference but I think this is the Lynch effect. He's a natural leader and inspires people, evident through his press conference and interviews. We know one thing about Lynch's signings; he picks up players that love football. Lynch will be able to land more talent than that "other" GM with the raspy voice.

You're right about him as a run stopper. I think we have our NT. That's not a small contract, but with the cap space and knowing how Parrag does things, this is by no means an albatross contract. Mitchell has enough experience in the league as a proven commodity. Not expecting flashy splash plays. Just don't get moved at the point of attack and he's worth the money. Seems like a younger Glenn Dorsey.

And he does seem to one gap/slash in pass rush/penetrate too. Kind of like Ian Williams.

that's a bold statement to make.
So as it stands right now, how does our front 4 look? Is there any way that if we sign a beefy NT type, that we could roll with Armstead-Mitchell-beefy NT-Buckner?

Or draft someone later in the draft
Nice pickup. Good contract. We need linemen. No complaints here.
I guess the bold print does not excite u but this is only the beginning. The niners will be making bold moves this off season the likes we havent seen in some time. lets enjoy the ride !!!
Lynch did come into a good situation though. We have low expectations, high draft picks, a young roster, and lots of cap space. It's not like we're just now beginning the rebuild, we're all ready a couple years some what into it.
I just had a thought- does this kinda remove us drafting Allen at 2 or do you guys think it's still possible?

Seems like our defense has everyone all kinds of confused, haha.

LDE- Buckner/Armstead
LDT- Mitchell/Dial
RDT- Armstead/Buckner
LEO- Lynch (at the moment)

Mitchell starts at the 1T and is like Mebane in Seattle's defense. Sounds like he is versatile enough to play all other positions on the interior DL as well. I wouldn't be surprised if we re-sign Dorsey or Williams (if he takes a cheap deal) for depth still.

This shows we have an approachable management again. It's good to see FA giving us a sniff again. Before they would rather take less to go somewhere else.

Don't think this is the case. Both Buckner and Armstead are better pass rushers and would be at 3T over Mitchell.
