I'm biased on this one lol. I'd build a statue outfront of Smith reaching around that O lineman to sack Brees. Dude is my hero. I have no issue retiring his number.

Retire number?
Stone cold greatness on one team, over time.
None of this where half your greatness is on another team--just doesnt seem right to me.

If they were going to retire #94 they would have done it by now.

Nah, don't retire it. I'm not a fan of retiring numbers unless its for an absolute legend of the game.. 16, 80, 42, 8....those are numbers I'd keep retired. Everything else should be available imo.
This.

There is no need to retire numbers. No one is going to forget Hall of Fame caliber players that played in our lifetime.

No. Why?? Players play well and do their job and end up retiring their number?!??
Did the patriots retire 80? Troy Brown
The cowboys 88? Or 21?
How about the patriots 93 for Richard Seymour and he was one of their best
I don't even think 97 should be retired. Or 21 or 52. Retire legends. 16. 80.. can't retire everyone who plays well and does theiR job

So its Patrick Willis and Frank Gore's fault we went full potato at the end of the Super Bowl and threw it away to Crabtree 3 times?
Both are HOFers and the best Niners of their generation. Stop trying to take away the honor they earned.

no player should be bigger than the team.. look at Maradona in barcelona. wearing 10.. then Rivaldo wore it.. then Ronaldhinio, and now Messi... i think that if we see another wide receiver stud wearing 80 it will make us think back of the days when Jerry Rice wore it.. if the number is not used and not worn its forgotten...
