How many wins this year for Shanahan's first season to be considered successful?

Beat me to it! LOL! Since it's not going to be a championship year we may as well use it for building and forget wins. If wins come? Fine. But the focus should be on finding players and installing the new offense and defense.

We've always had threads like this. As fans at this time of year all we have is conjecture and sharing of opinions.

i have never engaged in any sort of discussion on how many yards a back will have. how many yards a guy will throw for or how many wins we may have. i have always thought they were foolish and today i just thought i would voice my opinion on it. i shared my opinion

Really, it's more about the overall look and vibes of how things begin to pull together than outright wins. So I voted 3-4, because to me it really isn't the point next year. Next year is all about laying a systemic foundation.

But stating how many wins you'd be happy with is so bad?

I'm excited about Shanny but with this roster he's not expected to win right away it'll be a process. I think we'll finish anywhere between 2-4 wins next season.

My outlook is if the 49ers (Kyle) doesn't like any of the QBs coming out of the draft and don't find the answer to the QBoTF in 2017 (trade/FA), then what better way than to own the #1 overall in the 2018 draft? This is a full rebuild and while I won't sit down on Sunday hoping for 49er losses, I want what's best for the long term future.

To the question in the OP, I just want to see the players buy in. I don't know what that means and what tangible evidence of that looks like. Perhaps have the team continue to scratch and claw in week 16 when the W-L record is not so good. That would be a good sign.

LOL! No, no tanking, but also no rash partial rebuild to mediocrity! They could bring in a couple of FAs at QB and WR to give the fans hope but that would be a huge mistake in my opinion. I want to see what they did in the 80s...building solid units. In a way they are similar today than 79--they have a decent OL, a pretty solid group at DL but need a lot of help in the defense at LB and skill players on offense. So the major difference is the backfield on D has a better group than 1979.

If you look at those early drafts, the niners drafted Montana and Clark in 1979, RB Cooper and four LBs in 1980 and their whole defensive backfield (other than Hicks) and two DL in 1981. That's a three year turn around similar to what we need now. If the current DBs are good enough then the team needs to concentrate on skill positions and LBs this year. If Williams is healthy the DL is fine, OL is OK, and RB is not a huge need though could always be better.

QB, WR, WR, LB, LB, LB...perhaps not all this year.
