The longest-tenured coach in 49ers history? Bill Walsh with 10 years.
Kyle you've got 10 more years to beat that record. I'd start off by making the playoffs by the end of the decade.
Win a SB, climb to 3rd on the list of all time 49ers HC's. Earn degree of difficulty points for taking over a bombed out roster.
I'd love for Kyle to be our #2 all time head coach, even over Seifert.
Now we all love George and he will always be a 49er legend (he coached on all 5 SB champion teams), but if Kyle gets 2 for our beloved team that would be enough to get him there considering the vastly different circumstances behind their hirings.
Maintaining a consistent winning record in today's NFL where parity/mediocrity is valued over long-term success, is very difficult. Love him or hate him, Tom Brady notwithstanding, Bill Belichick's record demands he be considered among the top two or three coaches ever for being able put together such a consistent winning history.
If Kyle, with Lynch's help, can come anywhere close to that conversation in the next 6-8 years, he will deserve a statue.
I respect the winning record Bellicheat has with Tom, but in terms of innovation, I think Bellicheat's contribution to Football is his capanomic approach to talent evaluation. He's a good defensive coach and a good offensive coach. It takes a special coach that doesn't have a lot of offensive experience to coach the offense when his OC dies and not skip a beat on offense. Got to hand it to him for that, but what makes him fall below legendary status of Lombardie and Walsh is all the controversies he's been in while being coach. Just my opinion, but if you cheat to win, I think that devalues whatever wins a coach has.
As for Kyle, I think he truly is an innovative offensive coach. I don't know if he'll usher in new kinds of offensive philosophies like Walsh, Landry and Lombardi did, but amoung all the coaches now coaching in the NFL, I think he has the highest potential to change the game at the level of a Walsh or Lombardi.
I think his depth of offensive knowledge and willingness to innovate will stand him well there for a good number of years.
Where he will determine his long-term success is his ability to put a strong, consistent defensive team on the field. That ability was the overlooked genius of Bill Walsh. He didn't just "get lucky" with George Siefert and the rest of that D staff. He understood what it takes in order for the offense to have a ball to play with.
This is where John Lynch comes into play. If all the stories are true, and I have no reason to doubt them, Kyle picked Lynch as his GM over other guys. Did Kyle realize that defense was his weakness and therefore needed a strong defensive mind like Lynch to balance the equation? We don't know the answer but it could very well have played into it.
