We never see him go up tempo for awhile in an effort to slow the pass rush or throw off the defense. When they started pressuring Jimmy he didn't move the pocket and let him roll out like McCoy did. Straight drops with Jimmy getting trapped. I'd like to see a few more shots down the field so the defense can't clog the middle. He sometimes abandons the running game quickly like he did yesterday. The running game is what makes the short passing game work. He knows that so it's a mystery why he gives up on it.

These are just a few things that I see that baffle me about Kyle's play calling. One of the things that made Walsh so great was his ability to adapt and change things up if it became necessary. Once in awhile he would do an entire series with no huddle. Sometimes he would run when the game seemed to call for passing. He would pull out a trick play and then file it away just to let teams know it was a possibility. Kyle needs to do some of this.

The problem with so many here is that they made Shanny bigger than what he is..

It feels as though he doesn't know how you play to his team's strengths, or attack the oppositions weakness.

i hear you b/c we see the talent but at what point will this actually happen? Year 7? This offense has yet to play a complete game this year. Putting up points against Chicago and Detroit mean nothing. Both teams are total trash. when will the offense help out the s**t show defense and not fumble the game away? it's way too much talent for the offense to be so inconsistent. I'm nost sure how the defensive can possibly show any improvement. We have 1 pass rusher, FW isn't playing well, and the entire secondary is trash. Only way to improve is if the players step it up. I just dont' see the talent. And with a rookie DC it's even more amplified b/c he's learning on the job. And what vet presence to we have mentoring Ryans? He just started coaching 4 years ago.
Agreed watching the offense is frustrating and that playing well against Detroit and Chicago doesn't mean a whole lot. I still believe the offense is good, it just needs to show consistency. Jimmy is part of that consistency problem, but so is the rest of the offense especially with dropped passes. Overall though I think the offense is talented enough to play well.

The defense is a completely different issue. Think everyone agrees the unit trotted out there yesterday is pretty trash. But what I saw went beyond just bad players. It was a unit that simply did not look interested in playing. They were uninspired and lazy. I guess what I would want to see is a bit more heart from the guys through the rest of the season. Be in the right spots, tackle well and show something. If Ryans cannot bring that out of the defense through the rest of the year that's where I think it would be time to consider moving on. Bring in a coach with a bit more experience just to give the team some sort of presence on the sideline. Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here! I don't know that I could be more disappointed in what the defense did yesterday.
3 things Kyle needs to do before next season to save this situation and his job:

1) Take a step back from player personnel decisions and bring in a top tier player evaluator.

2) Hire a better defensive coordinator.

3) Develop Trey Lance into the QB you thought he was when you drafted him or go get Aaron Rodgers somehow.

The sad thing Is, I doubt we'll see any big changes. Kyle/Lynch/Demeco will still be doing what they are currently doing now.

sadly, you're probably right.

Kyle isn't all of a sudden going to give up his responsibilities to anyone, that's just the truth. Who's going to tell him he needs to do less, Jed?! lol
I have seen enough, I think we need to move on from Kyle. He is more suited to being an offensive coordinator than a head coach and there is no world where a guy can step down and stay with the same team. If there was, I would keep him because I respect his talent that much. He is an offense genius, the plays he designs are great, the evidence of that is that so many teams steal from us so heavily. The problem is, he is a bad coach. He doesn't teach well, players are slow to develop, some never develop at all. He doesn't lead men well, you see it on game days, with the penalties, the carelessness with the ball, the slow starts, the weak effort. He doesn't choose the best players. We do ok on talent but reading between the lines it always seems to be the Lynch and scouting picks that pan out, when you hear it was a Kyle Draft crush they often take a few years to cook, or are a complete wash out. It all adds up to what we see now, an undisciplined, sloppy, but talented team that often has holes at key positions despite the fact there are high capital draft picks not even suiting up for game day. The system is beautiful, but the man who designed is no leader, no teacher, no coach.

He is a great play designer. Unfortunately, his sequencing of plays often do not connect.

He is not a good head coach/leader of men. We see this in how soft the team plays. Kyle relies on scheme rather than effort. As I watched the Titans own the Rams last night, the one thing that stood out was the grit with which Tennessee plays. That is a reflection of the tough-minded approach Mike Vrabel had when he played and what he expects of his team. The Titans are not markedly more talented but they are certainly a lot tougher in the way they play the game.

I have written before that I think Kyle has tried to convey a cool guy image to his players instead of a blue-collar approach to the work ethic. Players do not want a cool guy coach. They want a guy that teaches well.

As to his poor player evaluation, that has been well-documented. No need for more of that from me.

It looks like Kyle has lost this team. His expression of being surprised and disappointed at the poor play after what he called a great week of practice says he does not recognize what is going on right in front of him. He is a mad scientist who cannot connect to reality.

Good post.

Kyle is like the polar opposite of Harbaugh. Interestingly enough they both reached the SB with their particular style.
In 14 years as an NFL play-caller, Shanahan's offense has only ranked in the top 10 best offenses in the league four times. In the other ten seasons, his offenses have ranked 20th or worse. As a head coach, his overall record is an abysmal 32-40. The 49ers are 3-5 so far in 2021, and many believed they were a Super Bowl contender at the start of the season.
Kyle reminds me of Nolan, power got to his head.

He keeps (Jimmy G/Tom Compton) and drafts (Solomon Thomas/MM/Joe Williams) guys he likes rather than investing in guys that could help the team (Mahomes/Watson/many CB's).

But when it's all said and done Kyle can say he did it HIS way.

I'm honestly not sure what I would like to see from this team at this point. I think the offensive side of the ball is just fine and can play at a high level. The defense is in shambles, in part due to injury and part due to bad personnel decisions. This season is in all likelihood lost. Suppose at this point I would like to see the young guys get playing time and see some improvement in the defensive side of the ball. If the defense can't start showing marginal improvement through the rest of the season it might be a good idea to end the Ryans experiment.

Except it isn't. The right side of the OL is a mess. Banks is another high draft failure. Brunskill is an excellent swing tackle but is out of position at guard. Mack is a mid-grade center at this point, an upgrade from last season but is not the future. Now with McGlinchey down (for how long), we may get a chance to see what Moore can do. Unfortunately, this is not the week to throw a rookie out there against Miller.

What "young guys" would you like to see on defense? We have no depth at any position. All we have is a collection of castoffs and UDFAs, none of which show any promise for the future.

All this is a failure of player evaluation.
