Would've much rather gotten Nelson and extended him. We will be without Trent in the near future and Nelson would be an anchor on the OL.

All said, I like the move and give Lynch props for going for it.

Buckner is 32 years old, on an expiring contract, and has already made his big money. For starters, NOBODY is offering him close to a max contract at his age.

On top of that, he has already seen that the grass isn't greener on the other side and has realized winning means something to him. It is very realistic to see him coming back on a a team friendly 1-2 year deal beyond this season, especially if they win the Super Bowl.

I can see DeFo taking a reasonable 2-3 year deal to close out his career here, especially if the 49ers have some playoff success to end this season. The familiarity with the franchise will get him to stay. Just hope there aren't any hard feelings from him getting traded to IND.

The rumor is he chose the niners over the bears so I would think he is past that.

First round pick: The team has 5 years of control
Second round pick: The team has 4 years of control

Theoretically an extra year without having to pay them.

Well it's controlled, the fifth year option is expensive. It's tiered determining how much their fifth year
Option is, which is fully guaranteed by the team.

if you're really good, your fifth year salary will be equal to the transition tag or franchise tag (depending if you've made pro bowls or not).

i think he meant that is a disadvantage and that is why we traded down

They are good too but tbh they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Lets not act like those guys dont miss too. I'd put john at the table with those guys

I'm not saying he's the best but lets not act like Schneider and Roseman haven't missed as well. Every GM misses and in fact they all miss more than they hit on picks, trades and free agency. Our fans have some type of unrealistic expectation though.

Fun fact about Veach:

Only three players he has drafted have earned Pro Bowl selections (Humphrey, guard Trey Smith and kick-returner Mecole Hardman)

Agree 💯 %, those generational genetic freaks are gone usually after those top 10 to 15 picks. That's why if you are picking 32, might as well get more day two and day three picks by trading down. Its a team game, and so for example - I think a all pro DLine and an All Pro Defensive backfield beats a Hall of fame DLine with a good (but not great) defensive backfield. In other words, another approach to the draft is to get more good players versus just getting one great player.

This. I believe you nailed the 49ers approach to the draft. It is to get more good players versus just getting one great player. Where they draft means they are not going to get that elite player. I think they supplement via trade and if they can get an elite player via trade they will. It is perhaps why I hope they may go after Wilson . . . we'll see.

The NFL is a numbers game. By that I mean the number of healthy players you have is almost as important as who you draft or who your coach is. Drafting more good players vs one great player makes sense because injuries are so common. A lot of top draft picks get injured in that first year.

As I was typing this the station I was listening too was talking about draft picks. They called the bottom of the first round dead man walking territory for GMs. They were pointing out that the Seahawks and Niners will both be drafting at the end of the round as usual so the 3rd rounder the Hawks gave up is like a 4th rounder and then 4th the Niners gave up is like a 5th rounder.

Theoretically, the first rounders (top 10) are generational players, the rest of the first round all the way to the 4th round are starters, after that, 5th through 7th rounds are developmental players, and UDFA's are long term projects.

So it comes down to draft class, the kinds of players available in each draft class and where the team is drafting (dead last or first pick) so every year it changes in terms of draft dynamics.

So trading for Buckner is like getting a top 10 pick on the tail end of his career - same as Mike Evans. 49ers will never (I hope) ever draft top 10 in the first round from here on in. So getting those top 10 players is going to have to be through Trades. Buckner was a 1st round 7th pick same with Mike Evans. My point basically is that 49ers first round picks have been generally ineffective because they (theoretically) have been really 2nd round picks due to the 49ers always being in the playoffs most of the time.

I don't think you understand how the cap works in terms of restructuring and cap management. We could absolutely afford Nelson.

For one, there's no way Bosa carries a $54M cap hit next year. He will either be restructured or traded.

And I don't think you understand that the 49ers have young players like Renardo Green and Dominic Puni, among other vets, coming due and those guys are a priority over a LG when they have a 1st year starter whose played pretty well outside of a couple games and is only going to improve.

We don't pay guards period. We'll let Puni walk after next year. We have Willis and Colby ready to take over as the two starting guards (though they may be grooming Willis to be the next center).

No, the 49ers' don't let mid G's who are overrated walk. Burford and Aaron Banks were just not good, probably slightly below average, and there were teams willing to pay them r****ded amounts for their services. Laken Tomlinson was good, but judging by his performance post Shanahan, I think it's fair to say Kyle's system propped him up.

Puni is young, playing lights out as a run and pass blocker, and I think there is value in the continuity with him on the OL, especially with McKivitiz' development and being under contract for the next couple years.

Roseman?? The guy with a complete dumpster fire and we've beat 3 of the last 4 times we've played. If our qb had his arm attached it'd be 4/4. Drafted Jalen ragor over JJ, Arcega-white side over dk and scary terry, Nelson agohor in the first, Davis hasn't lived up to expectation, Carter only dropped for offfield issues (every gm would take the talent.) You can do this with all of them. Sometimes you hit sometimes you don't

Maybe. In 10 years, they've never paid a guard big money, either our own or an outside FA, nor have they ever attempted a trade for a top guard. The evidence suggests that they don't prioritize the position and won't invest significant money in a guard. Maybe with Puni that changes, but it shouldn't surprise anyone if they let him walk.
