Someone has asked about what "all-in" means, either on this or the trades thread.
For me "all-in" means: "Trade for an available player who can be better than those you currently have in his position, even if the latter are healthy. And don't worry about the compensation."
Some players will not be tradeable because their current teams need them more than draft picks (forget the outlandish part exchange deals - nobody WANTS Jordan Watkins on their team other than for free. Perhaps. Maybe. If the stars align). Or their teams don't want to absorb dead cap hits for any pick compensation. Or both. Or they may simply hate Lynch, or Jed, or the 49ers as a concept, or the colour of our helmets. So, forget about those.
But once such a player IS conceivably available go for it, for the resources you have.
Don't worry about "taking reps away from youngsters". The time to win is now.
Don't worry about "draft capital". The time to win is now.
For heaven's sake, don't nickel and dime with which round the pick you're trading will be in. Number of picks can be an issue (you're wasting the option of having more than one player in the future) but the round? Especially below the 1st round? Who knows where some college player will be pickable 9 months from now? Note, that this doesn't mean that multi-pick compensation is bad in itself. There's surely a happy medium between one and your whole draft as per Ricky W trade.
"All-in" is not a guarantee that you will win the SB. The player may get injured, or suck. Even if the player is fabulous and you get to the SB, your QB may overthrow him while wide open - AGAIN. Or he may be put on a chokehold while the referee is whistling a happy tune - AGAIN. Your stupid punt returner may muff a punt - AGAIN. You may sleepwalk for a half and find yourself 4 scores down - AGAIN. You may get a chance, but you refuse to run Frank Flippin Gore from the 5 yard linep - AGAIN.
Or a lot more things can go wrong. It's life. It's sports. If it were deterministic we wouldn't watch.
What "all-in" does is to get one more lottery ticket. One more spin of the wheel. In fact, everything that a GM does is exactly that. Only "all-in" means doing this now, in the hope of building on a cracking start to go for a title, rather doing it in April "to build for the future, through the draft".
