IMO not every position is equal in regards to midseason trades. WRs take time to develop chemistry with a QB and have confidence in the scheme (for him/kyle and the QB)…Like I've said there's not a ton of high end midseason WR trades where the incoming WR outperformed on their new team that same yr. The only real "success" was When cooper got moved for a 1st to Dallas.
IMO DL is a different animal…Rushing the passer is rushing the passer. Yes scheme is important, but overall the timeline for seeing the value of the move is quicker.
They shouldn't be breaking the bank for a WR imo. Not unless they view him as a long-term guy…SF has two young WRs on the roster that they spent up for (Ricky is 2027) and they have vets coming back. They need decent depth.
Mack makes a ton of sense to help them win now. He's a rental and shouldn't be costing you a ton. There will be instant returns there.
I'm sorry, but tossing names and random draft picks for compensation is meaningless to me. "I wouldn't go above a 4th rounder for X" - good for you, but is the player even available for a trade, or is (say) the dead cap hit to his old team such that they will never trade him? I especially dislike all those "journalists" who come out with clickbait:"The 49ers COULD/SHOULD target X" or "5 possible trade targets for SF". It's the equivalent of "5 possible supermodel dates for paulk205" or "paulk205 and supermodel X would be a great fit". Yes we would, but it's also highly, highly unlikely to happen
I can only speak about the strategy and philosophy the team should follow, and use actual trades it has done before as examples. I thought Emmanuel Sanders was an excellent trade for 2019. We were in a similar situation we are now - rather unexpectedly doing super well but needing additional weapons beyond Kittle and the wonderful running game. The CMC trade revitalised the team at a time we were very uneven. Both came in and contributed almost immediately, and didn't need to build "chemistry". They were just that talented. This is the kind of trade we should aim for, and forget about "draft capital". You don't throw open top bus parades for draft capital, but you do for championships.
We also shouldn't project about talented but unproven young players. Watkins and Cowing MIGHT be decent and COULD be developed. Perhaps next year or so - but what about now? Pearsall has done very little and is injured a lot. Sure, some of it was mishandling by the team, but he's been mostly unavailable. Anyway, he's out for the year. I loved the Stribling pick (and was in the minority, like in the case of Black) but who knows how much he can contribute even if he comes back fully healthy? He's a rookie. Jerry Frigging Rice was up and down as a rookie and he's only the GOAT.
An aging team that has unexpectedly stormed out of the gates and now has a potential path to a championship should reinforce success, not economise on "draft capital" or project that injured players (especially rookies) will come back to help on this path.
