I think LaCanfora said on Sunday that the 49ers were AND HAD BEEN honing in on Shanahan right after the McDaniels announcement.
I think he knew he wasn't their guy and made the announcement.
Better to say "Yeah, I'm going to stay here, but thanks anyway" when you KNOW the other side can't say "uh, thanks, but we are offering the job to someone else".

My understanding is that they can interview but not offer a job until the NFL open periods. Is that true? If so would that be after the Falcons are out?
