Week 10 2016 Coaches Film Thread: at Cardinals

On the 49ers third offensive drive, they ran Spot and did not convert. But it showed ARI the play. Here, the 49ers run a play that starts off looking like Spot, but instead of a Corner, it's a Dig (yellow).
vs Cover1 blitz


The blue safety is expecting a Corner route. Even the defender on Vance is expecting it. But Vance cuts inside and exploits the area over the middle.

The 49ers actually attempted to convert a 3rd & 19 from their own 5 yard line...and they converted! This was a great throw from Kap. On time and on point. This is the kind of throw that makes you want to see more. Then wonder why it doesn't happen more often.
vs Cover6?


7 step timing. Kap takes 5 steps on the drop, hits his 5th step, and immediately fires the pass. Torrey is taking a jab step towards the inside to set up the Out and Kap is already mid windup.


+21. Excellent landmark throw. Throw to a spot and it's up to the WR to run a good route with proper depth.

This is the strip sack by Eli Harold. Finally he puts up a highlight, but upon further review it was more a brain fart from Palmer than it was anything great that the 49ers did.

ARI runs a combination Mills (yellow + orange) + Drive (orange + red) concept.
vs Quarters
The 3 underneath defenders are Bellore, Reid, Ward. It is important they know their roles. One thing an offense can do to confuse pattern matching defenders is to use late presnap motion, then snap the ball before the defense can adjust. Below is 1 second before the snap. The WR running the red route (it's DJohnson) just motioned out of the backfield. This will cause Reid to react and follow DJohnson.
So in this picture Reid is the middle defender. Bellore is a curl/flat defender. Ward is the other curl/flat defender.


This is one moment after the snap. Reid has now gotten on the outside of Bellore. So now Bellore is the middle defender, but this happens so fast that they aren't able to adjust. This leaves a hole in the middle of the field because there is no middle underneath defender.


Had Bellore and Reid worked it out, one of them would be the middle defender to pick up the red drag route. Tarrt sees this and reacts by vacating his zone to pick up the red drag. Palmer is fixated looking to his left and doesn't see the weakside Post work the area Tartt is leaving.


Palmer senses pressure that isn't really there and flushes to his left. Brock has his man coverered, as does Bellore.


Notice how Reid comes from behind to outflank Bellore right before the snap. Not sure how they are coached to handle this, but what happened doesn't seem correct as far as coverage is concerned. At the bottom of the screen Acker looks like he is expecting inside help from Tartt. Good thing Palmer never worked the weakside. Eli with good hustle gets the forced fumble and Buckner gets the recovery.

All game long ARI lined up with 2TEs and/or bunched up formations to run the ball. This was a key stop at the time early in the 4th quarter.



Dorsey and DeFo will execute a stunt with DeFo going 1st into the A gap, then Dorsey looping around to hit the B gap.


DeFo crosses the face of the LG and occupies the LG and C.


Dorsey loops around to take the LT and the TE.


This opens a lane for Bethea to penetrate as he beats the WR's block to the inside.


No gain. Bethea blows this play up, but it's DeFo and Dorsey that set it up. This was an example of scheming to create lanes to penetrate, but for the most part, the 49ers seemed to play good sound assignment football to keep DJohnson's ground game in check.

It was an okay throw. Underthrown gave the defender a chance to make a play Patton had to slow down for it, better throw and thats an easy TD

I thought Hodges played a very good game, I wonder why he got benched for Whilhoite earlier in the season? Bellore is still terrible but you could definitely see how much better our DL looked with Dorsey in the middle. Buck, Eli, and Dial were all solid as well.

For the most part I like Chip's passing offense. On occasion he can call the same play too many times in a game but he might just be trying to set up the defense for later. I would like to see Vance get a little more involved. It feels like he's been our big play pass catcher this year. Now if only we could break off some big runs from our RB's. I can't remember the last time Hyde had a 25+ yard gain.

This concept is absolute money for Chip. We've seen it in just about every game and it's accounted for a lot of our biggest plays this year. It's this play:

In Chips words the routes are from top to bottom post, deep cross, bubble and fly. We've seen big plays out of pretty much every route but the bubble this year on this concept.

Nice! Thanks for doing this again! It definitely seemed like Kap was shuffling around in the pocket better than I've seen him do in the last year and a half. It definetly helped him stay in for a couple big completions . Hopefully he can keep it up, but his issue has always been consistency so we'll see.

I think this team is finally starting to gel. I'm liking the improvement week to week. We knew offensively this would be a project but I really want to give this O another full offseason with Kap at full speed.

Kap looks good to me. Still a little slower than usual, but he looks better.

Thanks for the film breakdowns. I especially like the one of Buckner and Dorsey's stunt. I was hard on Bethea on a recent posting, but he looked good on that play.

This was the play of the game for me. It showed all the things you want in a QB and WR. Moreover, it showed a "what the heck, we're going for it" call on the part of Kelly. The fact it was against prior tendencies in that kind of down/distance situation helped set it up, however, the players have to execute.

Yes, it was under thrown. CK had a clean pocket, stepped up and looked like he put a lot into the throw but it was short. For now, I am willing to say that with more time and experience, he would have laid the throw out in front with more air under it. That having been said, there were still several throws where more arc and less fastball would have been good completions. Two that come to mind are the ball Hyde could not catch in the end zone and a 15 yard throw to the left sideline that was too high for Patton.

The RT tackle gives a quick shove on DIal then looks to move to the second level. Skov reads the play.


By reacting quickly to the play, Skov beats the RT to the spot.


DJ bounces it outside where Brooks has head up and has the edge.


DJ gets around Brooks but had to go backwards to do it. Brock will miss the tackle but does his role and forces DJ back inside.
