While we're waiting for Marvin's 2nd watching thread, I figure this one can just be a place for some quick takes about different things (rule: nothing more than one sentence per item). *This looked like the 9ers dominate run D from a few years ago. * Was indifferent to the Kerley signing, but with him back there this was the first time I wasn't holding my breath in fear on every punt return since Ginn was in town. * Ray Ray is pretty boom or bust on a per-play basis, but damn if he doesn't make a lot of slash plays, and damn if he, as a former safety, might have snatched Tartt's job on passing downs. * Truly great games from Brock and Ward, and maybe the best I've seen Brock play. * Gabbert throwing well short of the sticks from a clean pocket on 4th and 2 is a good example of why I'll never be able to really root for Gabbert. * Vance McDonald held onto two difficult throws with bodies around him. * Now that Armstead's spin move is on tape I think it's going to get him pancaked if he keeps going to it over and over again. * Kelly's run game really looks figured out and broken, as the only runs of note were Hyde abandoning the play and bouncing out because the Rams were too undisciplined to not all funnel right into where the ball was supposed to go (they got this cleaned up after halftime, hence, no running game in the 2nd half). * Buckner, Armstead, and Blair are the D lineman who are sexy to talk about, but d-line gameball for this one has gotta go to Quinton Dial. * Really nice to see Eric Reid playing aggressive and getting his head in there, but Bethea still looks like he's done, and once the 9ers are out of contention I hope they give Tartt a shot. *Somehow Torrey was even more invisible than he was last year. *Really great game by the O-line, particularly given the level of competition they were going up against with the Rams front 4. * I can't remember the last time I saw the 9ers play such a penalty free game, which was really, really impressive.

Brown is too strong to get bull rushed and is too long and wide to go around. This guy is truly a diamond in the rough and rarely is an OLman exciting to talk about but I am excited to see more from him. I'm glad Hayes graded out as a good player. Makes Brown's performance that much better.

Because the Rams sold out to stop the run.... yet we kept running it. Why no play action in the 3rd quarter????

GLAD to say that it was the LAMBS.. in boxing, this was a warm up match... our Defense looked very active... if Ward can stay healthy, he will be an ALL PRO this year.. even when he isn't making the tackles, he would throw his body around in order to disrupt those OL..

The secondary did their job, but lets not get too excited... Lambs QB is a NOBODY...

Tartt is freakin shredder.. and that's what I will call him from now on.. THE SHREDDER !!! did you all see when the kick or punt returner was trying to stiff arm him.. Tartt gave him one of those SUH like QB (Cutler) sack !!

The defensive PLAN was really great, and you can tell by the substitution package..

LAST but not the least, Tank just isn't an OLB (as I've been saying all 3 years long).. he's a dead body when it comes to coverage.. and he belongs in a 4-3 scheme.

Bow - back to form, the spiritual and physical leader of our D that everyone feeds on.

Ray Ray- he may be a perfect compliment to Bow, his speed and coverage skills allow him to fill into those small gaps in Bow's game.

The D-line- They are huge, strong, and athletic....and they are going to get better from here. They could be scary.

The Oline- good pockets, big holes, held up even without Tiller.

Kerely- Great hands and a sense for where the soft spots are...he is going to be the security blanket

Mixed

Gabbert- He runs the offense really well, but his accuracy is badly scattershot for long sections of the game. It has been that way for a while now, so I fear it isn't going anywhere.

Hyde - He is a stud...but man he take so many hits, I just don't see him making it a whole season.

Chip- He called a great game.....except that third quarter. I don't know what the hell he was doing there but it was way to early to take the foot off the gas. Run, Run, incomplete ....all up the gut. Scary....don't do that anymore.

Patton- protect the ball son!

Bad-

Celek....2 drops on a night when your QB needed you badly to capitalize on his better throws.

Torrey- remains to be seen but he has never seemed like a good fit to this offense for me that values quickness in short spaces over long straight line speed....this game furthered my concerns.

Draugn- debated putting him in mixed because he did some good things...but the turn overs are an issue stemming back to preseason. He HAS to clean that up. We need him to play a good bit if he have a prayer of seeing Hyde a whole season.

I don't recall that Draughn put the ball on the ground in preseason. The defender made a great play and punched it out from behind. It happens some times. Draughn is a grinder and plays hard. I like him a lot.

On that fumble he had that ball floating around like he was a scrambling QB. Gotta get that thing tucked in tight.

Oh, I'll definitely take that too. But take out 95% of Gabbert's yards from unplanned scrambles and probably about 60 of Hyde's 88 yards from saving blown up plays by sneaking back outside in the first half and what you're left with is about 30 carries that maybe produced 40 yards or so. The Rams deserve some credit for sure, but even including those broken plays and scrambles the 9ers ended up at 3.6 YPC.

At the end of the day without those things you're left with the great draw from the 8 yard line, three or four 4-6 yard carries up the gut from Hyde and Draughn, and then you're left with 20+ carries that went for somewhere between -3 and 3 yards.

It's against a good defense and it could get better, but this is something a ton of people have been saying about Kelly's run game for awhile now, and it's what I saw in this game too. I of course hope I'm wrong.

I just don't agree that they've figured out Chip's run game at all though. It's not like it some crazy scheme that no one has ever seen before. When he had a good OL and a RB made for the read option/inside zone they were a top 10 running team.

We got to understand that this OL is all pretty new as far as working together gonna take some time to mesh...none of that is gonna matter if our QB can't keep Ds honest. They need to spread the field out when you got every crowding the line for dump offs and the safeties playing in it's gonna be hard to run on anyone.

I can't take one game against a monster DL as a idea that his run game won't be productive.

I'm still wondering why, year after year, people - the "experts" - predict the Lambs to be taking the "next step". Yet year after year they show nothing. I don't get it
