Offensive Personnel: (2015 Snap Count)
QB: Blaine Gabbert (509); Colin Kaepernick (502), Jeff Driskel (0), Thad Lewis (0) & Dylan Thompson (0)
Battle Royale: What's crazy about this battle is that Kaepernick could end up #1 as easily as he could #3 on this depth chart now. Driskel has some really nice upside and Lewis knows this offense like the back of his hand. How quickly can Kaepernick heal and absorb the new offense?
Somehow, I expect Kaepernick to retake his starting role. Gabbert was surprisingly inaccurate with short and medium passes so he offers no upgrade in that regard. If CK takes to Kelly's system and buys in I could see a rejuvenation.

RB1: Carlos Hyde (292); Mike Davis (126) & Kendall Gaskins (91)
RB2: DuJuan Harris (61); Shaun Draughn (253), Kelvin Taylor (0) & Jarryd Hayne (63)
Battle Royale: Sounds like Hyde is 100% and feeling great. Davis started to come on a bit late last year but behind a better OL then too. I'm actually a bit excited to see how he runs now on inside zones and off tackle. But the RB2 spot is where the true battles will be. I have a feeling it's going to come down to Harris and Taylor here and both should be excellent compliments to Hyde.
Not sure how many RBs they will keep but it doesn't look good for a few of these guys. Davis will be going into his second year but I can't see them holding on to him unless he shows more than he did last year. Taylor will take his place. I also fear that the Hayne experiment might be over. Hope not because he has broken field ability that few big guys have. I hope they work him into a hybrid position RB/TE/WR. Last year he had few shots getting the ball in space...and he just doesn't know how to attack the LOS as a RB. If Miller sticks, then Hayne may not. Other than that, Harris and Draughn both proved to be versatile backs. Can Draughn fill the Sproles role this year?

MTE: Bruce Miller (143); Busta Anderson (0) & Devon Cajuste (0)
TE: Garrett Celek (399) & Vance McDonald (468); Blake Bell (352) & Jamie Childers (0)
Battle Royale: Bruce Miller is a "move TE" now but I think in the end, that role will go to Vance McDonald and we retain Celek and Bell. In short, I think Bruce, Busta and Devon are gone. But either way, this is one intriguing battle b/c of how Kelly is going to adapt to having so many TE's and the competition itself.
Would love to see Bell jump to the start of this group. He is a smart, heads up player who can get in sync with a QB and be an escape valve. Love Miller but this is a huge jump for him, against some really good competition. McDonald... boy I hope he clicks, but don't expect him to. Wonder if Kelly will use either of the rookie OT's as extra TEs for blocking situations?

X WR: Torrey Smith (772); Jerome Simpson (85) & Bryce Treggs (0)
Y WR (SLOT): Bruce Ellington (143); Aaron Burbridge (0), DeAndrew White (30) & DiAndre Campbell (0)
Z WR: DeAndre Smelter (0); Quinton Patton (424), Dres Anderson (0) & Eric Rogers (0)
Battle Royale: Well, what can you say about this group? All have unique skill sets that match the specific WR positions...speed, deep threat at the X, shifty, quick WR's that can make contested catches in the middle of the field for the Y and big-bodied Z WR's perfect for screens, slants, etc. But what do we really have? Of all the battles, especially under Kelly's offense, this could be the most fun and important to watch.
This area has disappointed me since Rice went elsewhere! TO was great but self destructive and the only other guy who was near his prime and top caliber was Boldin. That's a whole lot of yuch! My hope is for Smelter and Rogers to take one spot and T Smith the other. That offers size and speed the niners have lacked in the past. Would also love to see Ellington take over the slot...get him into open space and let him work. Hayne would make an interesting Slot guy as well. I would not be surprised if Boldin resigned either...a one year contract to continue mentoring.

LOT: Joe Staley (1,011); Fahn Cooper (0)
LG: Zane Beadles (1,058); Andrew Tiller (614), Blake Muir & Jordan Devey (388)
C: Daniel Kilgore (267); Ian Silberman (0)
RG: Joshua Garnett (0); Erik Pears (1,011), Brandon Thomas (0) & Marcus Martin (819)
ROT: Trenton Brown (186); John Theus (0) & Colin Kelly (0)
Battle Royale: How good does it feel knowing that there is about a 1% chance of Pears and Devey being back? The fact that those two took up 1,400 snaps last year is sickening. I think to start, there is going to be an EPIC battle at the G spots...with Beadles, Tiller, Thomas and Garnett. It's expected that it will be Beadles and Garnett will win both G spots but the way Tiller played last year and the ceiling of Thomas, who truly knows. Who here wants to see Trenton Brown vs. Arik Armstead and DeForrest Buckner go at it in practice? I really like Cooper as well and Theus has a shot to be a solid swing-T himself. We needed depth there badly but obviously, the team is feeling really good about Brown, his development and his diet. If he pans out, what a diamond! Naturally, he's still a question mark d/t his low sample size last year and Kilgore has always struggled with strength at the POA. I'm curious to see if anyone can actually challenge him this year and at least, add some quality depth.
This appears to be the most improved area, which it certainly needed to be. Adding Beadles and Garnett provides super competitive OGs to the mix and adding the two OTs will push Pears off the team. I expect Devey, Pears, and Thomas to either show some improvement or be gone. The one thing we can't know (having not been in TC listening to them) is which OL are good team mates who help each other? Martin and Devey looked absolutely lost most of last year. Was it all their fault or were they playing next to guys who hung them out to dry? (Mostly each other?).

Defensive Personnel:
RDE: DeForest Bucker (0); Ronald Blair (0), Alex Balducci (0) & Tony Jerod Eddie (290)
NT: Quinton Dial (640); Mike Purcell (288), Darren Lake (0) & Garrison Smith (0) (Ian Williams - 659)
LDE: Arik Armstead (375); Kaleb Ramsey (0) & Demetrius Cherry (0) (Glenn Dorsey - 45)
Battle Royale: This DL has the chance to become one of the most disruptive DL's in the game with just 3 players. Obviously, Dial is going to have to get back to form manning the NT spot thanks to Ian's "undisclosed injury" but Purcell seems to be getting better and better as well. We'll need a heavy rotation so the real battle will be for the 4th, 5th and 6th spots.
Are we back to a three man line that can put pressure on the QB while the other eight pass defend? That would be great! The niners just signed two guys capable of playing NT between the two big guys--Lake (Alabama) and Balducci (Oregon)...so they are really working on making this an upgrade. These two are UDFAs but they may make the team unless Williams is healthy--they could back up Purcell if they leave Dial at DE.

TED: Gerald Hodges (366); Michael Wilhoite (616)
MIKE: Navarro Bowman (1,098); Shayne Skov (8) & Nick Bellore (7)

ROBBER: Jaquiski Tartt (719)
Battle Royale: Remember, Tartt is the 3rd ILB here in nickel and dime sets...there may be cases where he's the only middle LB. Hodges, once he started was either #1 or #2 in tackles last year in every game. He has talent but was adjusting to the 3-4 and new defense. His idol is Bowman. I don't think there is any competition here at all. But we are thin behind them in terms of skill set. Wilhoite is average at best and we'll have to see how far Skov has come (similar to Scooby).
I like Hodges and Bowman together, though no one would confuse Hodges and Willis. They may not use two ILBs very often though if the DL is much improved...see a lot of nickle in our future!

Good projections NC! =
i'm interested in the NT battle of 2 behemoths Alex Balducci and Darren Lake. It'll be fun to seeing Oregon's starting dline during training camp preseason games.
EXCELLENT thread NC!

Fine comments dtg.

Some quick comments.

I'm hoping the lukewarm reception to Kap wanting a trade by other teams was a kick-in-the-ass wake up call.

He has to realize the world is passing him by. I hope he knuckles down and returns to the guy we all hoped he'd be.

More confident in the OLine in quite some time - especially Trent Brown

VERY concerned about Hyde. I'm optimistic w/a better line he can avoid injuries. I feel we need to get a much better guy behind him - if he goes down.

I'm thinking Tartt is going to have a break-out year.
NC, where's Tartt?
looks like a pretty big scrum for the second starting corner and slot corner positions - I bet at least one of the new guys surprises everyone.

Gacias Wally! I think Harris and Taylor might back up Hyde OK but agree...he's a load and not easily replaceable unless you take a guy in the first couple of rounds.

Top offensive battles at 49ers camp: Kaepernick, Gabbert not only ones vying to start
Posted on July 26, 2016 by Cam Inman

Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are about to duel in the 49ers training camp's ultimate position battle.

No strangers to quarterback competitions, the 49ers will have that and more when they open training camp Saturday. Here is a look at the top-five competitions on offense:

5. Right tackle: Anthony Davis' name returns to the mix – with an asterisk – after he announced Monday he's finally applying for reinstatement from the reserve/retired list. Do the 49ers indeed welcome him back after a year hiatus (or 1 ½ years, as he missed the 2015 offseason program), or do they trade him, assuming he indeed is reinstated?

Either way, the right tackle position has been a weak link the past two seasons on an offensive line that was the NFL's best as recently as 2012. Erik Pears struggled, especially early on, in the 14 starts last season before yielding to then-rookie Trent Brown for the final two starts.

Pears' experience (10 years) and history with new offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins could help him. Brown (6-foot-8, 355 pounds) must show up in better shape to merit a promotion, which isn't a sure thing for a 2015 seventh-round pick.

Likely Week 1 starter: Pears

4. Tight end: Both Garrett Celek and Vance McDonald surely will garner a lot of time together in two tight-end sets. Both are coming off career years. Both have durability questions. Neither is a touchdown machine, with three apiece for their career (all from last season).

Celek re-signed in February, so the pressure is on McDonald to really live up to his billing as a 2013 second-round draft pick.

Blake Bell and converted fullback Bruce Miller also are in the mix, though likely for a No. 3 role, whileJe'Ron Hamm seemed to show more than Busta Anderson in spring workouts.

Likely Week 1 starter: Celek

3. No. 2 wide receiver: Torrey Smith is poised to assume (thrive?) as the No. 1 receiver, seeing howAnquan Boldin's three-year term hasn't led to an invitation back for Year 4. But who will complement Smith?

Quinton Patton (1 TD in 36 career catches) is no lock to assume the No. 2 role, and it will be worth studying how his overzealous approach will mesh with Chip Kelly's ideals. Jerome Simpson has a great opportunity to revive his career. Bruce Ellington figures to see a lot of reps, especially from the slot, but a slew of unproven options abound on this young corps.

Eric Rogers, a CFL import, has the 6-3 frame that will be especially enticing if he shows the desire to challenge for every ball. DeAndre Smelter, a medical redshirt as a rookie, remains raw at the position and his massive mitts surprisingly let several passes slip through his hands in the spring.

This is an intriguing (in a freeway-rubbernecker way) battle for roster spots, so don't rule out Dres Anderson, DeAndrew White, Aaron Burbridge, DiAndre Campbell, Devon Cajuste and undrafted Cal product Bryce Treggs, who exclled in the offseason as a surprise gem, though not yet as a No. 2 receiver.

Likely Week 1 starter: Ellington (and Rogers in three-receiver sets), along with Smith.

2. Backup running back: Carlos Hyde is the undisputed catalyst to this season's offense, which promises to be run-oriented. But what if Hyde's durability issues resurface? The 49ers scrambled for replacements after Hyde broke his left foot last season, and some viable options surfaced.

Shaun Draughn emerged as a surprising find off his Cleveland couch last midseason, but he scored only one touchdown in 76 carries. If not Draughn, then 5-foot-8 DuJuan Harris might be the shifty, change-of-pace back to complement Hyde.

Kendall Gaskins (practice-squad call-up), Mike Davis (1.7 yards per carry as a rookie) and sixth-round draft pick Kelvin Taylor (5-foot-10) aren't ready to lead a run-oriented attack. Oh, and Jarryd Hayne is out of country, and out of the sport, with no comeback in sight.

Likely Week 1 backup: Draughn

1. Quarterback: Blaine Gabbert has been the 49ers unquestioned, starting quarterback for nearly nine months now. For Colin Kaepernick to win back his job, he must show up healthy, regain teammates' trust, and confidently run Kelly's fast-break offense with no-flinch decisions and accurate passes.

This isn't Joe-v-Steve, 25 years later. But it will be the most scrutinized QB duel since then. Every pass in team drills will by charted by the media, and every interaction with Kelly or teammates will be (over)analyzed.

Kaepernick, after being extremely limited in the offseason program, expected to be medically cleared for camp. If the 49ers balk and place him on the physically-unable-to-perform list, they could stash him on PUP to at least start the season (and most of the year) to thus protect them from Kaepernick's injury-based salary guarantee for 2017. That, of course, assumes they are in Go-Go-Gabbert mode.

Could Kaepernick be trade bait if another team's starter gets hurt? Sure, as long as they have room for his $11.9 million base salary, and a belief he can adjust to their system at the last minute. Kelly and Kaepernick, however, have got along merrily, so the first-year coach likely won't want to ditch a potential perfect fit for his offense. It's Trent Baalke, not Kelly, who calls the roster shots, however, and the Kaepernick-Baalke relationship is mute, at last check.

Likely Week 1 starter: Gabbert

While I don't always completely agree, I do appreciate the work you put into this. It is interesting to get your take on how this is shaking out. Agree completely with your RB/WR/TE analysis though.
im ready for the camp battles

No question. I already had to make edits to the OP just based on the mini camp info. I'll edit along as needed (i.e. injuries, players switching positions, etc.)

Thanks. My work is the OP. This article is done by Cam Inman but was relevant to my OP/Thread.
CK behind Driskel? That's a little overboard And you think that in nickel situations they are going to leave Ward on the outside instead of letting him go cover the slot? I'd rather have DJ on the outside with Ward in the slot. Good work
