Why didn't you come here at the height of the 2012 campaign? I am pretty sure the forum was flooded with positivity back then.

He is locked in through 2018, he extended his contract when they hired Tomsula which makes me think he was on-board with the hire.

There is no such thing as locked through, Tomsula was locked through for 4 years too. LOL.

Yup and Jed using that cap money to pay off Tomsula's contract.

I think he is tied to Chip, unless they hired Gamble as a backup plan which would seem to undermine Baalke.
I´m finding it a little ironic that you perhaps could say that Chip Kelly will indirectly be fighting to keep Baalke in office.

If the future of Baalke is depending on the success or failure of the team - and ultimately how well Chip performs this year.
I'm surprised a lot of you keep mentioning that free agents don't want to play here. That may be a solid point however free agency rarely works that way. Some of the worst front offices mainly Jacksonville every year have gotten free agents to come there despite being horrible. They overpay of course but that negates the theory that free-agent players don't want to come to a toxic environment. Jacksonville has been a laughing stock for almost 10 years and they always manage to get free agents to go there. Money talks. Once in a while a player will not go there or to a team they don't want to play for. However if you offer a couple more million those worries seem to fly out the door with the free-agent.

Now I know it isn't the wisest decision to overspend, however when you have so much salary cap space it is OK to overspend on a good player such as the guard from Kansas City or Houston or the cornerback from Green Bay or KC or even Irvin.

So please, think about it before contradicting yourself. Saying that no free agents want to come here is not correct when the simple fact is if we offered a little more money I'm sure the free agents would come here. Free agency a lot of the time is about overpaying desired players. It is also about finding good deals on the second wave of free agency. We have done neither. We could've overpaid for some of the second tier free agents and we did not. We are talking about over paying a total of a few million a year to secure a good player or players that will help our team quite a bit

Keeping Ian Williams was the biggest priority. Dawson was resigned too. We extended Dial who looks to be an up and coming player.

Thad Lewis may not count as a player but he will offer experience in Kellys system and act as a coach for whoever our coach is.

We were after Sean Smith and he chose to go to Oakland. No other corners are worth that money. We were after Sweezy but he got a rediculous contract in TB. Apparently we are interested in Larsen, Dunbar, Okung and Laurinitis too.

Baalke has been trying but Im glad he hasn't shelled out contracts like the guys have been getting. Most of these guys will be cut in a few years anyways because they will be busts.

Do what we did in 2011. Extend/keep our own players. We extended McDonald and Gore in 11 and Williams and Dial this year. We got bargains in Whitner, Rogers, Goodwin and Edwards in 11 after the madness calmed down. I expect Baalke to do the same this year.

We had a s**tload more talent already on the roster in 2011. People need to stop trying to make those comparisons.

I wouldn't necessarily call 2011 roster that offseason s**tload better or more talented sure we had Justin smith and Patrick Willis but a lot of unproven guys in 2010-2011

Plus the 2009-2010 drafts weren't that great only quality guys were iupati and Davis at the time as Bowman was a special teamer and backup lb to spikes

Patriots spent some money on Revis and Browner when they won last time.

Here's a recap I did on my draft website, http://pigskinprospects.com/recapping-first-week-2016-free-agent-market/, clearly a lot of ridiculous deals were given out, no way would I have given someone like Olivier Vernon, who isn't proven yet, $40M fully guaranteed, and $17M a year, or Malik Jackson, who has what 5 career sacks, $31.5M fully guaranteed, and $14.25M a yr.

No way I would have given Osemele $25.4M fully guaranteed, and $11.7M a yr, it would cripple the cap.

The list goes on and on, guys like Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu, Brandon Brooks, Janoris Jenkins, Damon Harrison, Brock Osweiler, Alex Mack($20M fully gtd is too much for a Center IMO), J.R, Sweezy, Doug Martin, Chris Ivory, Coby Fleener, Travis Benjamin,Tashaun Gipson, and Lamar Miller those kinda deals, they all got overpaid IMO.

The good value deals are Ian Williams(APY wise, I'm sure he got low fully guaranteed money), Sean Smith, Jeff Allen, Mitchell Schwartz, Danny Trevathan, and Jerrell Freeman, I also think Bruce Irvin's deal is good value for Oakland.

Now I'm not saying these were bad signings player wise, as Osemele, Martin, Fleener, Brooks, Harrison, Osweiler, Mack, etc.. are at the top of their positions, but the amount, fully guaranteed, and APY were too much for me to justify, these teams will be in cap hell in 2 years, especially the Jags and Giants deals, giving that mich guaranteed money to two unproven DEs was a mistake IMO.

Quick note on why I think Ian got low guaranteed money fully is his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, he is known to be have a great relationship with the 49ers, he did NaVorro Bowman, Anthony Davis, and Torrey Smith's deals, plus he also represents Frank Gore, and he did both at least the last extension he signed with us.

IMO a max contract FA would be a waste on this Niners team and I definitely would be against that. OTOH plenty of second and third tier players, for reasonable contracts, are/were available that could help this team. Strange that no one visited though and one has to wonder what or who the reason for that is.

Actually they only spent big on Revis and not on Browner. I don't consider 3 years for 17 million a big contract for a CB(Browner) that was considered a top notch corner at the time, not anymore, but yeah. Signing one high priced player does not considered an all out shopping spree of FAs like what some of the fans in here is calling for.
Well hey, look at it this way, we should get a comp pick for Boone if we don't do anything else.

Hi, AB! Couple notes
1) Malik Jackson had five sacks this year, 14 total in his career.

2) This is a copycat league, and the model for success right now is guys who can get after the QB. Vernon was the number two graded edge rusher by Pro Football Focus for 2015, and led all 43 DEs in QB hits, so he is going to get a mega-contract. In Jackson's case, an interior DL who is a monster on passing downs and highly disruptive on base downs is going to be paid handsomely. Jackson grades out very well each year, and is hitting his peak. Free agency usually is a period of overpayment, but that is what it takes to get guys under contract, and for some teams with a ton of space, it makes sense.

3) Let's take the Jacksonville Jaguars as an example of a team with room that I believe did very well in free agency to plug holes and upgrade at numerous key spots. The Jags have limited skills in pass rushing, so they get the best interior pass rusher in FA in Jackson. He is matched up on the interior with Sen'Derrick Marks; hopefully, for them, Dante Fowler comes back to be their edge rusher, they pick up a needed safety in T. Gipson, they get Prince A. at corner. On offense, the greatest need was OL help and RB depth. They got K. Beachum to shore up their OL, and got Chris Ivory to keep defenses honest for Bortles and his excellent receiving corps. They will surely pick up one more valuable defender in the draft in Bosa/Mack/Ramsey. They suddenly are the team to beat in the AFC South and maybe make a run futher because they have the offensive skills players already in place. They just needed defensive help. If they land Bosa in the draft, their DL looks like this: Fowler------Marks-----Jackson-----Bosa. That is four active defensive linemen for offenses to deal with. With recent upgrades at QB in Houston this year, and Tennessee last year, plug Andrew Luck, they needed to make some moves.

I agree with you that some guys were great bargains in Trevathan, Schwartz, Smith, Green.

I am disappointed the Niners, in free agency, appeared to either: 1) be indifferent in this process of securing better talent; 2) be a place where nobody wants to go.

Let's be real about this team: more than half of the Niners starters are no better than backups (on offense, we might have only two true starters for other teams in Hyde and Staley) , and I don't see 14+ players from the Niners' upcoming draft upgrading more than a few of those spots.

It is true we are in a major rebuild, but young, talented players like Trevathan, Green and Schwartz would have been tremendous upgrades for this team, and give fans something to look forward to. Right now, we are, at best, a 4-12 team. I would say that we are in contention with the Browns, to be the worst team in the NFL this season.

I don't think it's that bad... YET. Let's see who we get in the draft. Shoring up that front 7 is the biggest thing for us because I think we have a lot to build on in our secondary. I like our DBs. I like Ian Williams and Armstead. I like Bowman and Lynch. I don't like the depth behind any of those starters, and the lack of true starters at the other OLB and ILB spots. Our hope is we can fill those holes in the draft and that Harold develops and/or Hodges or Wilhoite tear it up in the new system.

On offense, obviously we need add speed AND better utilize the speed we already have. But most importantly, we need OL help. We can find help on the interior in the draft and there are still FAs available who can help. Tiller will keep developing. Hopefully Thomas makes strides. Trenton Brown will get better. Kilgore should be better off the further removed from his injury he gets. And all signs point to Anthony Davis returning to play somewhere along that OL.

The QB situation is interesting too. Lots of "ifs", but I don't think we're as bad as some others think we will be. This team will be better coached, and we'll fill holes without really losing any key players.
