Okay. I thought you meant OG should be a strength going into next season. Based on what we saw from Martin, what we never got to see from BThomas, Boone being a FA, no idea if ADavis can slide to OG, Tiller forcing the team to move more to a power blocking scheme when he was in, which doesn't fit what Chip wants to do, there are huge question marks at OG imo.

Sure, anyone can compete for a starting job at OG. They can also win by default unless Baalke signs a proven vet or one of those youngsters makes a huge leap in development.

Exactly.

Thomas had so much hype coming out. Prior to his injury, one of his strengths was supposed to be his agility.

I am really hoping that Either Martin or Thomas can step up and earn more PT as a starting OG.

I'm just hoping that BThomas was a victim of the inability of the previous coaching staff to recognize talent. Why Devey continued to play over Tiller was baffling. Hopefully BThomas gets a shot and is another case of the better player not getting a chance. Martin I don't know anymore. After being continually steamrolled, I don't know if it's just a case of him having to mature his body.

My hopeful scenario is BThomas comes to play and Baalke signs one good vet OG to solidify one of the OG spots. Go ahead and spend here on FA. That way there's only uncertainty at one OG spot.

I still have hope in Martin. Didn't David Bass take like 2 or 3 years to be good?
I disagree that the highly touted Martin should remain on the team. Pears and Devey...already decided....lousy choices. Besides Staley and Brown, the only guys we have as potential rotational OLs are Thomas, Tiller, and Silberman. Then there is our new CFL FA, Kelly, but unknown at present.

Just looking at that unimpressive list, it is fair to say that Trent's choices of OL...particularly those that were good deals...were horrid. (pears, martin, devey). And the other two, kligore and boone....may have started but were not starters. So when it comes to acquiring OC, OG, OT/OG, 3 starters on OL, i would hope that trent is not making the decision himself. If ever someone needed help somewhere, it is trent and OL Picks. Maybe chip, with all his failings in talent evaluation, can be of help. At least , i sure hope so.

Tiller is a good starting point.

Staley good for 2, maybe 3 more years.

Everything else is on the table for discussion.
Not sure why people are so high on Tiller. I saw a few plays where he totally whiffed on his block, usually on a stunt. So much into his initial block that he couldn't see the other guy coming round. By the time he looks up, the guy is already past him to the qb.

Big guy. Slow feet.

That raises any interesting question. If the Niners current olineman with talent don't fit Kelly's scheme, could they be traded?
For a second there I thought you were calling our online a bunch of asses. Which you would of been correct.

I agree. To your point:

A. Davis - good but took a year off so it's anybodies guess.

M.Martin - Terrible so far, but still really young. ?

Kilgore - good before injury, terrible upon his return, anybodies guess as to what next year holds for him.

T.Brown - intriguing prospect but no sure thing.

Boone - He's too busy worrying about his contracts all the time it seems. Doubt he re signs with team.

The other offensive lineman are essentially dispensable at this point.

To be fair to Baalke, Davis notifying him so late in the game is the reason we got stuck with guys like Devey and Pears.
Staley is the only OL we know for sure we can count on unfortunately

Tiller played really well and should have every shot to take one of the OG spots

We need to secure 3 starters on the OL in FA and the draft IMO, it's the teams biggest need

Boone: let him walk, not worth the money
Kilgore: too injury prone to count on as starter, veteran OC needed badly
Brown: Potential but can't count on him yet at RT
Martin/Pears/Devy/Silberman:Suck, get rid of these bums
Thomas/CFL guy: Development guys

Can't count on Davis but him returning would be huge. He's young, big, athletic, talented and under a reasonable long term contract. If he wants to comeback, you welcome him back with open arms.

Overall I'd really like to see us sign a veteran OC in FA. Then if Davis comes back, spend a 2nd round pick on an OG. Let Tiller, Kilgore, Thomas, Brown and the high draft pick(s) compete for spots around Staley/Davis/Vet C
I don't know how the current crop of linemen will fit in with Kelly's up tempo style but if Davis comes back I wouldn't mind seeing him move to right guard and keep Brown at RT. I suspect Boone will leave so I am imagining a front of Staley, Tiller, Kilgore, Davis, and Brown. They also picked up that guy from the Canadian league who I don't know anything about. Martin is pretty young so he still may develop though he hasn't been very god so far and Thomas might be better after being another year removed from his injury. The last two seem like they need to get stronger physically. Martin got pushed around a lot at both center and guard and seemed a little lost sometimes when he was out there. Don't know what Thomas' issues are.

IMO, we need to get the very best FA player we can for the Oline.

If Joe goes down and Boone is gone - we have nobody that can man the position.

I'm not buying into the AD savior thing.

I think he's a flake and we can't rely on him deserting the team again.

Even if Davis DOES sign his reinstatement papers, Baalke still needs to treat the draft and FA as is he's not even there!

Agree

IMO, he needs to get proven 2 FA for the OLine.

Tackle to start at RT and work in to replace Staley in 2 years and a C or G to start.
Tier 1: Staley
Tier 2: Davis, Boone
Tier 3: Kilgore
Tier 4: All the rest

Boone won't get re-signed. So we need a 2 Gs and a T.

As far as I'm concerned we can blow up this whole thing, save Staley. He' the only must have on the Oline. I do like what I see from Brown and Tiller though. We really need to solidify the C and Guard positions to keep a clean pocket and take advantage of Chips inside runs when he spreads the defense with our WRs.
