No, I don't think it does. I look at Holmgren as somebody who hasn't been in the game for a bit, and wasn't super successful the last time he was (albeit in a different role with the Browns than he would have here). He doesn't have teams beating down his door, but rather expressed interest in coaching for the 49ers (which is a sentiment not likely being reciprocated).

A younger coaching candidate with more widespread interest in his services will be more choosy about which team he coaches for. A negative stint and a quick fire has a negative impact on his future earnings potential compared to an older "looking for one last gig" guy like Holmgren.

I think Holmgren is speaking as a fan and doesn't want "his team" to stay in the mess they are in. I think he'd be open to coming in and helping out in almost any capacity. He's on record in that he doesn't want any power. He just wants to coach. They should at least talk to the man, regardless of what direction they want to go in.

As for Tomsula, maybe he does the "honorable thing" and just falls on his sword. You know, kind of like Doug Marrone or Mike Mularkey in Buffalo. Just quit.
