2016 Needs?

The age old question...the chicken or the egg. Do we draft OL or QB. Gabbert will be the starter next year, beyond that I don't know. OL is terrible with no one on the horizon. If Goff is on the board when we pick, we pick a QB. If not, impact players and OL.

all high pick teams need a QB

let load up on trench men
The way I see it we are in full rebuild mode. So I break our needs down to three basic categories: Top Priorities, Top Needs, and Really Could use - in that order.

Top Priorities (Won't win without.)
- Better coaching staff. I like JT. But while he's more affable we won't win with him at the helm. York won't fire him though.
- Draft a QB with our first pick (Lynch, Cook, or Goff), regardless how well Gabbert plays. Let the new QB sit a year and Gabbert bridge him in for 2017.
- Draft an ILB to play along side Bowman. Trade back up in the 1st if need be. No sense in waiting to see if Hodges can start. If he can he becomes good depth. Or, go hard after Rolando McClain or Sean Weatherspoon in FA.
- Resign Boone. Pay the man. Cannot afford to let him go.
- Resign Tiller.
- Get Devey and Pears on the fastest plane out of SF.
- Change draft philosophy. No more injured players. No more specialist. No more "value" picks. Stop trying to find "hidden gems". The roster has those kind of players in spades. DRAFT GUYS WHO LEGITIMATELY THREATEN TO TAKE TIME AWAY FROM VULNERABLE 1ST AND 2ND STRINGERS!!

Top Needs (Gotta have)
- Resign Boldin. Still has a lot of gas left.
- RT. Trent Brown needs to see more time this season. At some point you gotta let him play.
- Resign Draughn, and draft a RB. Or go get LeGarrette Blount from FA (but still resign Draughn)
- Either draft a OC or go get the best OC in FA we can get, and move Marin to RG.
- Resign Ian Williams and let him anchor that DL, but still draft a true run stuffing tree-stump 2-gapper NG who can push the pocket.
- Resign Celek
- A defensive scheme that fits the personnel.
- Make the Black unnies a permanent ultimate for 4 home games a year. Hey, every little bit helps

Really Could Use
- Sign Muhammad Wilkerson, Stefen Wisniewski, Rolando McClain, and Alshon Jeffery from FA.
- Make a bid for Josh Norman
- Get Marcus Cromartie on the 53

I honestly think the WR position is OK. I honestly like the guys we have in the pipeline - DeAndrew White, Dres Anderson, and DeAndre Smelter (who I think will replace Boldin). But the coaching staff is gonna have to play them. The O-line just isn't holding up. I also think the CB spot is OK as well. The pass rush just hasn't been there. Plus D. Johnson needs to get more time.

hey dtg, couple things, Chris Davis and Marcus Cromartie are signed for 2016, as is Andrew Tiller. Also add Dylan Thompson, he is signed for 2016 as well.
Some important contingencies:
Quarterback: contingent on Gabbert's play. If he looks "iffy" by the end of the year, then getting a FA and/or high draft pick becomes a high priority
OT: contingent on whether A. Davis comes back looking good. If not, then a FA or very high draft pick at OT become a very high priority (and should be a fairly high priority even if Davis comes back and looks good).

Less contingent:
OLB: Best FA rushing OLB available should be a high priority
OL: Either a highly rated FA offensive guard/center or high draft pick is definitely a priority.
ILB: not as high a priority as OT, OG/C or rushing OLB, but a pretty high priority

I'd look for good FA and 3rd-4th round draft prospects at running back and cornerback.

Why not do both. Drafting a QB doesn't preclude you from building up the OL through FA and the draft. This year is pretty deep at tackle so you can find a right tackle in the 2nd or 3rd round. You have some good OL's hitting FA that could boost the line, you have younger players like Thomas that hopefully develop, you have Kilgore returning.

Its not a situation where you explicitly have to choose one or the other.
Sorry, you start drafting for a starting OT in the 2nd and 3rd rd and we still have this problem 3-4 yrs down the road. Build your team thru buiilding your lines first. Been that way since Vince Lombardi first said it 60 some yrs ago. We need 3 starting OLs. We should trade up with our 13 draft picks (or is 14) , bundle the 5s, 6s, and 7s, into 3s and 4s, then bundle those into 2s and an extra #1 (and we could throw in kap if needed) and get two #1s and twio #2s. Then fix our OL. Be bold, do it now, and get our OL fixed for 8-10 yrs. But don't do it with 2nd and 3rd round guys. Get the best. Then get mack or pouncey in FA, and get that OL that we need. Utlimtately we may get Brown starting, but we need good backups also.

As for QB, i would say pick up a pair or 3, in UDFA. But if gab plays good enough the remainder of the yr to be our bridge qB , then get the passrush OLB and the DT starters we need with those other two firsts and two seconds we should bundle up to get. Let gab , if he does well the rest of the yr, be the bridge qb to 2017. Then use our 1st rd pick in 2017 to get our franchise qb.

Great lists! Would be nice if they could make all these moves, or even most. Not sure about the coaches yet but the five games left in the season will be interesting toward that end. If they come together as a team and win 3 or 4 of these without a drubbing in any......maybe?

AB pointed out that Cromartie is among several players I missed on the 2016 roster, so he's good to go. My miss on that!

Problem with our desires? FAs won't necessarily want to play here, for one reason or another.

Thanks AB! Missed them. Not sure they will all make the team next year but they do change the draft/FA needs for backups. I particularly like Tiller and Cromartie.

Agree but I'm not sure they should trust Davis to come back and play an entire year. I believe they need to think replacement and if he comes back...all good! Great competition.

I think that about covers it.
get the trenches sorted. Generate a rush by aggregate doesn't need to be a stud rusher just lots of competent pass rushers. As I've said many times I don't think your corners and safeties are good enough one on one but with a solid pass rush they become ok. Even if you draft a qb rd1 you don't want to stick him behind this line. In best case scenario Gabbert makes it clear next season that he is more than just a stopgap. Worst case scenario Gabbbert fails but you have an o-line that will be at the very least have at least one season together so the combinations and understanding is there and you can be somewhat confident of keeping a young qb upright if Gabbert doesn't pan out

Agree about the OL but I believe they need an impact pass rusher...probably an OLB rather than a DL. They have depth at all front seven positions, just not a guy like Aldon or Justin who can crush the pocket. I've wanted a top NT for a long time so that would be me one qualification on this...a guy who could move the center into the QBs lap would really make Lynch, Harold and Brooks much more effective in the pass rush.

With Kilgore and Davis coming back -- I think the O-Line is in for a big improvement. If we can add even one starting-caliber guard I think we will be just fine.

QB play is already improved with Gabbert.
We know we have a running game when Hyde is back (though, Draughn has been good).
Our TE rotation is serviceable.
Our WRs have deep threats, but no true #1 (this is a major need)

Our DL is good with Armstead and Williams. It could be "great" with a Wilkerson.
Our ILBs could use another starter next to Bowman
Our OLBs need a pass rusher on the other side of Lynch
Our Safety situation is very good -- Tartt, Reid, Bethea are all solid (despite popular opinion) and provide excellent locker room leadership
Our CBs need some love. Not sold on anybody back there as a starter. They're all very spotty with little consistency. Either they have a solid game or a very poor one.

Good post! I agree with most of it...especially the need to solidify the ILB and OLB spots! My fear with the OL is that you just can't count on guys coming back at the same level they once had.

But this is a great time to strengthen the OL and then make it great if they do come back strong. Imagine a 2nd round pick behind Davis/Brown at RT and a FA starting center to compete with Kilgore! That would strengthen the OG spots as well with Kilgore and Martin able to play there. So, with one draft pick and one FA the OL could be one of the deepest in the NFL. If Davis and Kilgore didn't come back it would still be much improved from this year.

Also like having some young guys come through this year as backups for next year--Draughn, Bell, McDonald, Celek, etc.

I think the CBs will be fine with more experience. The fact that Johnson was pushed to backup is really telling. Reaser is very fast and so they have both size and speed in the backfield. Safety is a strenth on the team so that will help out the CBs as well. Another year will help Reid, Ward, Tartt and McCray to develop further.
