Tomu really fast tracked a return to losing ways. We looked so much more prepared to play defensively a year ago, even with all the injuries. Sacrificing Fangio and Gase for Tomsula is gonna be one of those Smith over Rodgers style head shakers for years to come.
WORST TACKLING EVER!!! SOMEBODY NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!!!!

Yeah basically. Fangio had a lot of backups playing last year and our defense was still top 10.

The truth is we have a weak coaching staff but everyone knows it.

Maybe this should go in a different thread, but at the beginning of the season I was much more worried about the offense than the defense. I thought there was a fair chance that there would be somewhat of a drop off in the defense because of the loss of so many good players (except the I thought the return of Bowman would sort of balance out the loss of Willis). And I thought Mangini wouldn't be quite as good as Fangio, but I didn't think the drop off in coaching would be huge. At this point in the season, though, I think it is getting more apparent that Mangini is a significantly worse defensive coordinator than Fangio. At a minimum, his defenses produce inconsistent results where Fangio's was much more consistently good. If the 9ers management actually had a chance to get Gase as head coach and keep Fangio as defensive coordinator, I think that the evidence so far this season is that they probably should have gone that route.

Defense is soft. Bottom line
Sheesh, every time we fix one issue, another one pops up. WTF is it with the tackling on the road. This is crazy.
But I thought the front office wanted a "teacher". Evidently teaching fundamentals of tackling is part of the teaching curriculum with this coaching staff.
all we do is draft safetys...and I think to myself...they can't cover but at least we should be one of the better tackling defenses...lol nope...
Tackling. f**king atrocious.
Its funny how in our previous game we held the leading NFL rusher to just 12 yds and now we let an undrafted rookie rack up 200.

This team cannot match Seattle's physical play anymore. For awhile we could go toe to toe with them but that no longer is the case. It's all about desire and willingness to play for your coach and that is lacking.

You can teach technique all you want but what i saw was guys with no desire to tackle. Rugby also emphasises team tackling ie 2-3 guys wrapping up a guy. What i saw on Sunday was "oh we're near the sideline and we've got him pinned he'll just step out so no need to tackle" then said ball runner proceeds to run riot and make them look stupid. Also why are they going so high and eating stiff arms in open space. That's just dumb. I've always hated the tackling technique of most corners in the nfl for a long time where they just dive at the legs without initiating contact with the shoulder or extending the arms .

In Rugby League they spend a lot of time also on solo tackling. In some Australian matches there are guys who do 45-60 tackles in a game. NFL is lucky to see a guy get 5-10 solos,

Its not the dog in the fight its the fight in the dog

where do they they this notion that rugby players can only gang tackle high..Sure since Phil Gould initiated the hold the ball runner up and slow the play the ball down, many league players are preferring not to put the man immediately on the ground. But given a scenario of one on one every nrl player is competent in hitting low and putting the player down.If you can not tackle you will not be in first grade because they will target the bad defender for the length of the game. But some c/b efforts are deplorable.Reminding me of Puig Albert(pipa)who declared if the twelve in front cant tackle him why should I.
The problem was the running back Rawls who has a very low center of balance and strong upper thighs. These type of runners are the hardest to bring down. They have thighs that are hard to wrap and difficult to shunt one knee into the other.Maybe a higher tackling style was the order of the day.If he has a very strong core it is hard to bend him and unbalance him because of the low center of balance.Other than that if they are difficult high and low then one has to get a good piece of him and wait for support by slowing him.
