i think they were keeping 99 for Aldon if he comes back.. but yeah 98 would look good on Purcell..

Just in case you haven't come across it posted elsewhere, 38 was the first number assigned to Hayne when he joined the Eels in the NRL as a teenager, which is why it carries personal significance for him. I reckon it's a cool thing for him to wear it for the 49ers, kind of a tip of the hat to the club that originally gave him a start and makes them feel part of it all.
