It is that time of year again. No, no, not that. Yep, that. In particular, the spectacular pre-season play of Jarryd Hayne has reinvigorated a San Francisco 49er fan base reeling from the loss of ERRYBODY. Seriously, we lost ERRYBODY! I am not sure if I know any of the dudes in the secondary, the linebacking corps looks different, and we have finally joined the twenty-first century because now we rotate players on the DLine! And equally important, arguably the star of the past few seasons, no not Frankie, not P-Willy, not Cowboy, not Aldon, not Crabtree.... Crabtree......HAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHA I LOVED YOU CRABS! WTF HAPPENED TO YOU? BESIDES INJURIES, I MEAN. YOU DIVA MOTHERf**kER! No, I mean this guy: Jim, you dirty, dirty monkey. I remember when you were "Captain Comeback", but I should have known that you would flame out. You burned bright; you guided us to a Super Bowl. And you deserve credit for it. But you promised us a return to the WCO. AND YOU LIED! Worse, you became something else... You were supposed to unite the force.....err...I mean, you were supposed to unite the Niners, restore the WCO, and bring peace to the galaxy...but no. You blew it. But still, we owe thanks to you for relighting the torches outside of Camelot. For showing us the way back to glory. For that, some day, you will receive a hail of applause at Levi's. Until then.... Next: It is funny, but many of us who defend our beleaguered quarterback feel as if those who criticize him are on the constant search for the next Montana or Young. The latter, Young, was not always accepted either. I always find that bit amusing with our fans who have selective memories about Young's battle for acceptance. Anyway, I feel we do this all over the team. We are always looking for the next Rice, Young, Montana, Lott, Haley, Jones, Craig, B. Young, Cowboy, P. Willy, etc., etc. Listen very close. We are not going to find them. But we will find someone else. That much I promise. This search for "next" also revolves around this man: We all desperately want this gentleman to reincarnate in some young coach who will come back "home" and resurrect the franchise. What a great man, he was. Not a football coach, but a teacher. One that cared, but always kept his mind to the task. But what if, just what if, we have a teacher among us. Maybe not of the genius of Walsh, but of a hard nosed ethic. Perhaps not all that different from Harbaugh, but with enough humility and fire based on trying events in his life to teach those who have always been heralded to listen. No, he is not polished around the edges. He is likely to tell you to punch the other guy in the mouth. But for this team, this offense, this new era, and my friends, it is a new one, he is our guy. He looks like an 80s actor playing a supporting role on a show like Full House or something. Maybe a partner in a buddy cop movie. But he is all heart and determination. And it is infectious. It may look like he is preparing the menu for the lunch rush at Tomsula's Italian Bistro. But he is teaching, educating, adjusting, and making sure that he commands the attention of his players. He once lived in his car, just to keep his dream alive. Soak that in. You are telling me that he is not going to give everything he has? This offseason has been trying for the Niner fan base, these boards, and for the Niners themselves. No, this isn't the Niners of my youth led by Walsh, or those of teenage years led by Seifert and Mooch, or the dark years of my twenties and early thirties led by cast of f**king screwballs. Or indeed, the Niners of the past five years largely led by Harbaugh. No friend, as I rapidly approach my fortieth year on the planet, the eleventh year on these boards, I am privileged to see a new era of Niner football. Let's be done with the old s**t. Let us be done with the strife of the past month that has plagued these forums, all parts of it, and have led to nothing but disruption. It is a new year. New fans and friends from "down under" have joined us. We are stronger, younger, and more experienced than ever before. We are, to borrow from our Australian friends, "Fit as a Mallee bull!" Now is the time to come together. Now is the time to go out and kick ass. Now is the time to move forward. It is time to let go, but always remember that the genius has the last word: God bless Coach Walsh and all of you. Have a wonderful season. I am Fropwns and I remain "Mad as a meat-axe".
