I thought the article was going to breakdown Aldon's performance without Justin in the lineup. Then I remembered Justin doesn't miss games. The entire defense is going to miss Justin greatly when he retires including the ILBs who got to run around and make plays due to Justin not giving up any ground in run defense.
The stunts ran by Justin and Aldon can be ran by Dockett because he played a very similar role with ARI running stunts to occupy blockers that allowed his team mates to loop to the inside. Although Dockett played a lot of left DT, not right DT like Justin. Aldon will still be a force without Justin. He's that good imo. But when Justin retires, everyone will feel the effects.

Interesting article.
First, any OLB/DE's performance will improve if Justin is playing next to him.
I'll be very interested to see how well Aldon does w/out Cowboy. Hopefully we'll find out the following season and we get one more year of Justin.
I don't think he'll have as many sacks BUT he'll still have many pressures and double digit sacks.
Thoughts??

I still haven't given up hope of Justin returning. I wonder if his decision is based on how JT does and whether he thinks we have enough to make a legit run this yr.

The sense I've gotten from the way reporters have talked about it is that JT is retiring, and has put off the final decision a couple times at the request of Tomsula and Baalke. They're throwing a hail marry in thinking he'll change his mind, and he's appeasing them out of respect for them.

If Cowboy stays for one more rodeo and with Dockett, Lynch and Aldon, teams may want to keep us out of our nickel package.

I don't think its any surprise that Cowboy has an impact on those around him. Whether it be Aldon/Willis/or anyone else in the LB core or on the line
Anytime you have a guy who needs to be doubled teamed or else he will get in the backfield, players around him will benefit. I can't tell you how many times I've seen Cowboy even force a double team on himself (usually taking a pulling guard or swing tackle) with him as he pushes the line back. When you have a player with that strength and awareness, your guys around him are going to play like superstarts (Borland/Willis)
I know lots of people hurt when Willis retired, and think that its going to affect this team drastically. But I think losing Cowboy will hurt this team just as much if not more. I don't think people understand yet how important Smith's role was here. He is going to be missed tremendously and is truly a 1 of a kind player.

part of me thinks he will retire
part of me thinks he may come back for the start of the year
part of me thinks the decision has actually already been made and the team is aware of it
I need to stop saying "part of me"
if he retires at least , unlike lott and other stars, he goes out on his own terms with no hard feelings. i also think his decision will have nothing to do with who the head coach is or how good we will be or will not be. country is all about football and team, regardless of the records. if it were anything else he would have tried to get out in the dark years . I just get sad when i think of all those wasted years of high quality play people like he , willis and gire put forth for us on some really bad teams. then i get really proud of them for staying

You and me both. He's a gifted pass rusher/olb, but he did disappoint last year and he will be affected with the loss of Justin; who wouldn't be? Whether he again becomes a force remains to be seen. For all of our sakes, i sincerely hope he does. He has a lot to prove, both on and off the field.

I agree in bold.
I don't think he's the kind of guy not to have communicated w/the team before/during FA and the draft.

I think this is closer to the truth.
And if I was Justin I'd just hang it up. I mean, why risk your health when you know the team is in rebuilding mode with a patchwork coaching staff.
I'll be shocked if he plays this year.
