After trying all season,Steve Young was finally able to buy his way out of the USFL. He went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL, and still receiving $1,000,000 a year from an annuity purchased by a team in a league that has not played any football in a quarter-century. Presumably, the annuity will continue to pay him until 2026. 1984 season[edit]Billionaire investor and vacuum cleaner salesman J. William Oldenburg bought the team and hired veteran executive Don Klosterman as general manager. Former Chargers quarterback John Hadl was hired as coach. Klosterman spent an enormous amount of money assembled an impressive stable of young talent, capped off by the signing of Steve Young, a quarterback who had played at the namesake university of his lineal ancestor, Brigham Young University. Agent Leigh Steinberg negotiated for Young what was then reported to be the largest professional sports contract ever signed - a 10-year deal worth over $40 million. The payments were to be in the form of an annuity set up to pay him $1 million annually for the next 42 years, so the value of the contract was considerably less than stated. That is CRAZY! He gets $1,000,000 a year til 2016 another 11 years haha no wonder Harris Barton said Young would leave game checks just thrown around on his dresser etc etc when young roomed with Barton in the Late 80's.

Karass school of negotiation, you get what you negotiate. Smart agents cash in on long term deals for their players. Joe Montanas agent had him sign an undervalued Ford Truck commercial spot, but negoitated a longer term. So he makes one commericial a year for Ford Trucks and makes a lot of $$$.
