Before the draft started, it was recognized that this was a bad year for OL. (Next year projected to be very good.) None of the good guys fell to use so they used the picks on other areas of need.

Of the top 50 OTs last season, only five were picked in the 5th round or lower...and that included Mailata, a throw-in unicorn at the 7th round.

Ben Bartch only played 65 snaps last season but he graded very well. He will likely earn the start over Zakelj at LG. McKivitz is serviceable at RT...he improved last season over the previous year.

Center is the biggest need and there are some guys on the roster that will fight for it.

The state of OL play in the NFL is just not good.

For the record, I love what they did on defense this year, but ZERO % happy with decision to pass up on oline until 7th rd

That's classic 49ers. 7th - 33 - 249 overall is their first and ONLY offensive linemen drafted. What can you really say?

Brendel must improve his pass protection. He grades above average in run blocking.

From a video clip that was posted a couple of days ago, it looks like he is doing the work.

In any case, we need to improve there.

FWIW, he is ranked 17 out of 40 Centers by PFF.

Sorry but I think at 33 years of age we know exactly who he is.

This is the only conceivable explanation -some vet signings coming down the road.

It seems out of character, though, with all the hysteria about money.

Hope your right-- it still doesn't excuse avoiding young depth at OL completely -- especially while speculating on WR (where we still have the #1 receiver room in the NFL if yuk comes back), or 4th string RB (who will get 3 snaps all year if McC is healthy).

Why defenestrate like this?

I counted 10 in 9 years. But I'd have to check that again. Anyway it's something around 1 or 1 point something per year. I routinely see some of these teams draft 3 of them every single year. Including high up picks many of the years. This team can't go on like this. It's totally absurd. They completely ignore it.

49ers will look to trade or free agency for O-line as a stop-gap

They traded a 5th to the Lions for Laken Tomlinson, so they may make a trade.
There will be several good O linemen available at cutdown time

Next year they will use a high pick for O-line

Agreed.

Its an average O line and who is going to play left Guard, who is going to play left Tackle while Trent Williams is out with an injury. Trent has never played every game in a season as a 49er. I would guess he will be missing some games.

Totally agree. They drafted (7th / UDFA) two players who played guard and OT in college so camp will add a little more competition. Hopefully, there will be some more moves before regular season.

I'm surprised they used all their 7th round picks instead of trying to trade up.
