2010 should have been a much better year. Singletary had the defense and running game. The Hags were a first year team and the Cards were missing Warner while the Rams had a rookie in Bradford on top of a crap supporting cast.
That was the Niners division to win. The problem was that Sing couldn't prepare the team for any adversity in games. They figured out ways to lose. At the entrance to what was going to be our first division title in 8 years, the Hags kicked the crap out of us with a roster that hardly anyone knew and a bunch of NFGs. Then we had the Saints game at home. We HAD to win that game didn't we? Yeah....we had that game, but nothing got me more fumed than an overrated DB trying to take a turnover and coughing up the ball for a loss.
0-6? You gotta be kidding me. That was OURS and we screwed the pooch because it takes more than just being physical.
Carroll would have won 11 games with that team and Harbs won 13 with essentially the same group. If that doesn't scream coaching choke I don't know what does. I went to the opener in Seattle that year. I was jacked up for that game and they sucked. At least they went 6-4 to finish the season but that was a painful season.

what's an nfg? also, wasn't there a prime time game between the cardinals and the 49ers and i remember not being able to punch it in from like two yards out? i vaguely remember someone barely touching gore and gore stumbled and couldnt make it in.

Also when Shaun Hill and Isaac Bruce were playing well under Mike Martz system...even Vernon was catching TDs deep over the middle. We had a few upsets that year...beating the Bills at Buffalo (they had just blew out a good team the previous week and we're pushing for the playoffs) and the Jets at home with Brett Farve.....I believe we blew our season against Arizona on a 4th and short attempt with a run up the middle to Norris....I forget...
But the defense was jelling at the time and showing their potential....and the offense was sustaining long drives and resting the defense.
We tried to punch it in with Michael Robinson at the goal line. Singletary's quote was that there "was a cavity"
I've actually thought about this a ton over the years. 2003, 2006 and 2009 are the three that I think go at the top in no particular order.
Of the bunch, I think losing Norv after San Diego fired Marty in Mid January 07 was a huge blow. Alex's career would have definitely taken a different trajectory had Norv stuck around for 2-3 more years.

I'm positive if Mooch wasn't fired, 2003 would have been another wildcard quality team. We had our offensive pieces merely one year before cap hell began, and they would have still been under the same offensive system. Mooch also knew how to approach Holmgren, and Martz; I think we would have swept Seattle again, and aced them out of the #5 seed.
We would have most likely lost to GB, but that would have still be 100% better than the squandered years offered upon us by the the York's first f**k up.

2003 FOR SURE!!!
Owen Pochman guys!!
The kicker alone cost us the playoffs. I think he missed like five or six extra points, and a ton of field goals under 35 yards lol. A lot of them in the division.
Our team was crazy talented. TO in his prime. Jeff Garcia had back problems, but was ready for playoffs. Julian Peterson was in his prime. Ahmed Plummer was in his prime. Bryant Young was still beasting. Garrison Hearst was in his final year.

2010 is the obvious one as we underperformed dreadfully, lost two-three games (NO, ATL, CAR) we should have taken, and Seattle got through with only 7 wins. But I felt that 2009 fell apart on a few bad moments - particularly that last second loss at Minnesota AFTER we had already stopped them on downs once which kept us from starting 4-0. I also think that the not very talented 2006 squad could have made a run for it after getting to 5-5 and throwing away the Rams game with that 4th and inches disastrous call to go for the FG. If we had gone 6-5 who knows what would have happened?

Oh, I so remember that game like it was yesterday, Robinson was the one who ran it on 3rd and 1, he went straight up the middle for no gain, when all he had to do was take go to the right and NO ONE was there, he probably would have scored a td, at the very least, gotten a 1st down

I remember the 2006 team being a very up and down team, I remember getting just crushed by chicago, we were down 42-0 at the half, then there was the philly game that while the score was lopsided I remember there was horrible officiating in that game. On the the flip side the team swept seattle that year, beat the broncos to keep them out of the playoffs and Frank Gore introduced himself to the league with almost 1700 yards

In 2006 apart from throwing away the Rams game, we had at least a decent chance on the opener vs Arizona when we had a long TD called back for holding (thanks Kwame
). OTOH we got simply murdered by the Bears and Chargers - we weren't very good that year, but we could have still made it if a couple of breaks came our way. I'm still kinda fond of that squad - we were not very good but we punched above our weight. 2009 had the Minny last second loss (
), and wasn't also that the year we lost at Arizona from the half inch line at the death? Or was that 08? Too much alcohol is not good for the memory

As yes, Michael "No Gain" Robinson.
I remember reading the zone during that time before I signed up to post and that dude was so grossly overrated on here that it made me a little sick. They justified his spot on the roster by claiming he was a special teams "ace" and acted as if it was impossible for someone else to step and and take that roll. As soon as he left, somebody else easily replaced him. LOL

In 2003 the 49ers lost 5ish games due to special teams.
I recall at least two blocked or missed extra points that effected late game strategy. Multiple missed easy field goals and several fumbled punt or kick returns.
That was a playoff team with an average special teams unit
