They can sign him after the season is over since he'd be a UFA. I would not commit multiple years to him after the season he just had. I agree with some posters' assessment that his biggest assets are strength and athleticism. I don't care how great an offseason regimen a player has, athleticism declines at 30-32, and VD has a lot of mileage on his body. I would take the risk of a one year prove it deal, then try to re-sign him if warranted. Giving him a multi year deal and having him falter can really hurt the cap.
Good question....i'm suddenly not sure if he is worth it anymore. I wouldn't give up on Vernon just yet though. Not until we see what the new HC/OC have in store for him....not yet.

I love Vernon as a person. And I admit he is a specimen as an athlete. He is/was special as a deep threat TE, and apparently a pretty good blocker for a TE.

BUT, I have said this before and say it again, he is not a natural TE - so he is not a QB's "best friend" in terms of 3rd down and outlet receiver. He is not natural catching the ball, his hips have always been stiff, so his route running is fine for deep routes and stop routes, but his routes for outs, ins, and sharp cuts are not there. Watch his routes, they are very rounded angles, which make him easier to cover. His stiffness is even apparent on his RAC, he has to stop to cut and then is easy to bring down. He does not have soft hands, so he catches and holds the ball awkardly.

He is NOT a Tony Gonzales, Graham, Whitten, or Gates - big wingspan, easy target for QBs that can also gouge the defense - or even some of the other emerging 6'5" speed TEs that are becoming key targets for other teams.

All that being said, it is quiet astounding he has been so successful, and that is really a testament to him as a person and his work ethic. He had delivered a lot of big plays - he was Alex Smith's only trusted downfield target that he would throw to in coverage, and he was great as Colin's deep target as well. Thank you VD for that.

But his age and just a little loss of speed have defenses now able to contain him. I HOPE, if he comes back he proves me WAY wrong.

But, I think the 49ers would be just fine trading him and getting a more traditional TE that can present a big throwing window to a QB to keep the chains moving. I'd be way happier having that added to the offense.

all of this

i always LOL thinking back when he tried to jump straight over that db into the end zone against the giants. and then those shakes on that huge RAC against the chargers this year when it was brought back because of a penalty
Vernon isnt worth the cheapest Jamba Juice he sells at the counter, he is a straight cancer who absolutely quit this year. Only 2 TE in history have seasons of 13 tds or more. All of a sudden he doesnt get his money and he puts up 26 rec for 250 yrds? He is out there jogging around blocking nobody and just saving his body. Not only has his NFL stock plummeted, so has his fantex. Ive never been so disgusted with a player as I am with VD. I would give him away for a decent pair of cleats. Kick rocks, exit stage left. Go paint something, go open another Jamba Juice. I could care less. He was once the Elite of the Elite, it has nothing to do with his being 31 or banged up. TE can play well into mid 30's especially a physical freak as him. He just straight up quit, there is no other answer.

so if your so unsure, then a trade for a for sure draft pick is the way...like why wait to see ,, if we wait then he turns into a UFA which gets you into a bidding war or he just leaves, while we get nothing in return

But you can't just trade him for any draft pick, it has to be proper compensation. What draft pick is worth giving up the 49ers only proven deep threat? I don't want him traded because he might still turn it around next season and possibly give the 49ers one more good season. He is worth more to the 49ers than to another team, which is why, imo, the 49ers would not be able to get proper compensation for him. You want to trade him? Name your price, then ask yourself if another team would be willing to match it.

If he has a good 15-16 season and looks for the highest bidder next offseason, then you thank him for his services and wish him well. I just can't take the risk of extending him this coming offseason, then have him stinking it up because his body isn't up to it and/or his mind isn't in to it.

Agree! You try not to trade players after a bad year with injuries because the players value is greatly reduced. The niners would be lucky to get a 5th round choice for him and would be fleecing a team unless they added an injury out in the trade...pick reduced or returned if player can't return to play (that would normally be done with a failure of a physical).

He is valuable to the niners, as you suggest, being their only sure deep threat. To another team he would be a TE who plays more like a WR.

As for those bashing him and calling him a quitter, he had a bad back. Was Staley a quitter when he had a bad back? A Davis? VD is a very prideful player and I doubt he decided to play soft because he didn't like his contract. Some are too ready to turn on their own players...Kaepernick, VD, whoever!

i was leaning trading him during the season if he repeats his 2014 performance, i dont think he can return to what he was..he only had speed which is going away and on top of that the pass had to hit him in the torso

If you wanted to trade him during the 15-16 season if he sucked again, how much do you think you can actually get in return? A slumping TE with half a year left on his contract. Not very appealing to another team. Earlier in this thread you posted that you thought he quit on the team. I totally understand why you would think that. This leads me to believe you do not place a high price for him. Correct me if I'm wrong.

In the spirit of this thread, any talk of trading VD has to come with naming a price. Every player that isn't a HoF has a price. VD should have a price that if met, you want the 49ers to make that trade. I posted my price for him above. I don't think there is a GM out there that would be willing to meet that price, which is why I don't see him getting traded. Very possible that my price isn't the price Baalke has in his mind. If that's the case, and VD is traded for a 3rd/4th, I would not be okay with that trade. I feel he has more value to the team than a 3rd.

My hope is he rededicates himself this offseason in an effort to earn his next contract. If he balls out of control in 15-16, good for the 49ers, and good for him. He'll price himself out of range and he'll find a large contract from another team. I feel trading him this offseason for borderline adequate compensation would also send a bad message to the veterans on the team who have a 3 year window in their career (Willis, Staley, Boldin, Gore, Bethea, and Justin if he is on the fence about coming back).

Fair enough. I'd like to keep him around in 15-16 to see if he can contribute next season. Unless Baalke gets an offer he can't refuse.

Do you really think it's that bad with VD? I'm not sure he hates the niners or wouldn't resign if he returns to health. My first concern would be whether his back will be fully recovered. I did see one mock draft with the niners taking WR White in the first and TE Funchess in the second...which would help replace VD...

idk he really proved on what i thought of him when he couldn't run anymore. Charles Clay would be a good possession TE

But he's not going to get that price on the market because Davis also has a high annual cap hit. Like others have posted here, the reward for holding onto the guy to see what happens is greater than the risk if he declines. If he does, so what? You lose a 5th round pick but can still release him? Whoop-di-do. I'll take my chances.
