The hate against Jed and Baalke is so strong from all angles, media and fans, that I am starting to question whether the obvious answer is the wrong answer. Those of us who actually watch the games know how badly the offense regressed, not that it was ever all that good except for stretches during 2012. Harbs had two years to fix the problem and did nothing, instead choosing to ride the coattails of Fangio's D until that too fell apart because of injuries.

I don't know anymore, but I am pretty sure this team was never going to see the top of the mountain with Harb's philosophy on offense. The new hire may be a disaster if our FO is really looking for a yes man like the national media claims, but if championships are the ultimate goal, then I don't think we made a mistake. Like Harbs said, if you aren't getting better you are getting worse. Something had to change. Since Harbs refused to change, he gave us no choice. Should be simple as that. Instead we have all this drama about a power struggle behind the scenes according to anonymous sources.

I agree, and especially the bolded part. The D was Top 5 this year with all the injuries, suspensions, etc., and the O regressed with better talent than previous years (yes, it had a few key injuries on the OL but so do other teams - this OL still has Top 10 talent & depth). Add on the terrible clock management/burning TOs the last four years all the way down to late in yesterday's game, the poor "situational football" displayed at key moments in huge games (end of the Super Bowl, end of last year's NFC Championship Game, etc.), seeing all the penalties this year...it goes on and on, unfortunately, and leads to what you mentioned here - something had to change and I don't think the Niners made a mistake.

Thank you Marvin, for intelligent and reasonable commentary throughout a turbulent and disappointing season.

The team will be much different next season, but I hope to see Frank and Justin Smith come back for one more year. They both still play at a high level and add intangibles. I think parting ways with Harbaugh was a huge mistake, despite his flaws, but by this time next year we will know for sure, one way or another.

I'm not so sure we'll know.

If the team flounders, peeps will all point to letting Harbaugh walk...

...but they floundered this year. Perhaps the teams age and injures is catching up to them. It's a rough gig for whomever is the next guy,

1) Kap: My favorite throw though was actually the 3rd down throw to Brandon Lloyd late in the game. Just high enough to get over defender and drop in to Lloyd.

Perhaps my favorite throw of the season. He can hit those touch passes every once in a great while.

My second favorite toss was the down the field laser he threw to Patton. The ball arrived with such zip on it that it nearly popped out of Quinton's hands! Love CK7's rocket launcher. It makes him one of the more unique passers in the game.

Remember -- it took Brett Farve awhile to settle down. But once he did he played at a championship level for nearly two decades.

For some reason, a little swing pass to Gore for +3 yards was my favorite pass of the game (first pass of the game). Gore doesn't break stride and was able to make a defender miss. Maybe not favorite in terms of impressiveness, but the one that stood out to me. This should have been done more throughout the season, and to guys like Ellington or Hyde.

Agree w/you guys.
Thanks for all the work all season long!

Great call on ADavis. It was night and day difference.

Maybe you are right. Next year someone might reply to you that the new coach had great players, many fewer injuries, and only went 10-6 in his first season, not nearly as good as Harbaugh. And if Harbaugh had stayed we would have won a SB.

We will never know for sure. (Unless we go 4-12).

if this group was going to go 4-12 this was the year to do it. but this group fought through distraction and injury and still ended the season at .500

I don't think they will go 4-12, no way, but this year I didn't think they would go 8-8.

I don't think they will go 4-12, no way, but this year I didn't think they would go 8-8.

This year we didn't know aldon would miss 9 games, pat would be lost to us after 4 dorsey would never play a snap williams would go down for the season, boone would hold out and miss games, johnathan martin would start half the season at rt, kilgore would get hurt, vd injured since week 4, brock would barely play and everything else that happened during the season. fully healthy or even 85% healthy, we'd be getting ready for a wild card game this week.

Think we'll be seeing much more of this next season. 2nd and 7 instead of 2nd and 15!

I don't believe it's a return to the dark ages and this year was a sign of things to come and all that s**t. It's been said a lot before but a marginal improvement, not even a significant one but even a marginal improvement on offense, and we're in the playoffs. In spite of all the injuries to boot.

Love Harbaugh. Wish he stayed, but like Marvin said, f**kin SOMETHING happened. I'm sure it was a lot of build up, a lot of little things, but if they really were trying to dump Harbs last off season, I expect that one major thing went down and was the tipping point.
Great write up as always Marvin49! So ready to see the next move for the 49ers this off season coach & player wise
Re-sign CullyInTheHouse ASAP!!!!! This guy played his butt off after the first few weeks of the season even though yesterday's game was a bit inconsistent.

He finished allowed 495 yards on 74 targets which averages out to 6.6 YPA which is very good.
