does jon gruden have 49er connections ? yet I've seen people advocate him as a coach in many places, this board included

people generally advocate holmgren because 1)hes an offense guy 2)hes a WCO guy 3)because hes a discipline guy 4)because he has ties with the 49ers

personally, I think hes done with coaching. but he isnt the worst candidate out of those suggested. in fact hes one of the best. Ill certainly take him over someone like gase or mcdaniels, easily

Sure doesn't hurt that he watched countless Bill Walsh instructional QB sessions and frankly, our QB needs a boat load of help right about now.

Yes he was on the 49ers coaching staff in 1990, he worked with Mike Holmgren.

I would take glowing reports from players and coaches with a grain of salt. I bet if you asked him right now Kap would have some pretty positive things to say about Roman. The one issue i have with Hamilton is he was brought to Indy to run Harbaughs offense. He was supposed to run a power run game so Luck didn't have to do everything. Right now Indy is #1 in passing with Luck leading the NFL with 544 pass attempts (he is on pace for 670 and which would put him tied for 4th all time and 43 more then his career best of 627 as a rookie) and they are 18th in rushing.

Man your just hating on every opinion out there that doesn't follow suit to yours lol

I think Pep or Gase would make for a great HC and realistically I don't see Gus leaving his cozy job in Auburn, I mean has he made any remarks about wanting to be a NFL coach?

That is the biggest issue with replacing Harbaugh. There is no great candidate out there. Everyone talked about has serious issues. Even my pick Gus Malzahn has negatives. I just happen to think he is one of the most creative offensive minds coaching right now who has proven it with multiple teams at multiple levels.

Just not in the NFL. But I heard he was damn good high school back in the day.

Chip Kelly went from 12 years at New Hampshire (an FCS school) & 5 years at Oregon to the NFL.

LOL. Weren't you mocking me earlier for bringing up Mike Shanahan in relation to Josh McDaniels. Kelly and Jimmy Johnson are the only true college guys that have made it in the past few decades, but hey, I'm sure your guy is the exception and not the rule of course.

You left out Tom Coughlin who was the head coach at Boston College before taking the Jacksonville job. Also the last three to leave college for the NFL: Carroll, Harbaugh and Kelly have all been successful. Bobby Ross (HC at Maryland and Georgia tech) was able to get a pretty average SD team to the Superbowl (only to get killed by the 49ers). Dennis Green was mostly a college coach before taking the Minnesota job. Steve Mariucci spend 13 years in college before taking the Green Bay QB job and then left for the California head coaching job for a year before coming here.

How is it grasping at straws? Not everyone is going to be an all time great coach.

Wow... Holmgren leading the votes... fantastic...

A lot of old school 49er fans here... awesome... he can bring back the true WCO...

Holmgren is proven...he has gone to 3 Superbowls with 2 different teams... Won one with the Packers... Had a bad break against the Steelers in another Superbowl with Seattle... and he can keep the Bill Walsh coaching tree alive!

I always wanted to have Holmgren take over for Bill Walsh in 1989, but the 49ers chose Seifert. Seifert and the Niners won the Superbowl that year, but that Superbowl was largely Walsh's team so I think Holmgren would have won it all as well. Seifert was way too conservative and wasn't really a keen strategist. The 49ers lost 3 NFC Championships in the next 4 years. I think Holmgren could have won multiple Superbowls with the Niners if he were coach instead of Seifert. Holmgren's Packers went on to beat Seifert's 49ers in 1995 & 1996 and won his own Superbowl in the 1996 season.

I also preferred Shanahan to Seifert and was really disappointed to see him go instead of Seifert after the Niners won in 1994. Shanahan went on to win a Superbowl for the 1997 and 1998 seasons with the Broncos. So that was a great stretch for coaches under the Bill Walsh tree. Seifert won in the 1994 season, Holmgren in 1996, and Shanahan in 1997 & 1998.

Finally instead of Mariucci, I always preferred Pete Carroll to take over for Seifert because he was one of the most effective and aggressive Niners DC's in 1995 & 1996 ... Carroll more than a decade later got his Superbowl.

With Holmgren we would really be able to continue on the 49er and Bill Walsh tradition...and that would be fantastic!

We better invest in one of these then..

The Bill Walsh era is over. You cant dominate the NFL with his playbook anymore. Holmgren is old, and hes been out of coaching far too long to keep up with todays game.

People need to let the Walsh stuff go. Its not coming back. It was a period of time in the NFL where he caught the league off guard and dominated for nearly 2 decades. But, it has been figured out for the most part.

Hey he made the Superbowl in 2005.. that's not that long ago. I agree 66 is getting up there in age, but I think his wisdom will make up for it. Harbaugh's youthful spirit will remain with team, and the old man of the mountains will take us to the promised land. He spoke with Oakland and he's itching to get back it seems.

Holmgren is the highest up on the Bill Walsh tree and I would rank him higher up than George Seifert because he was the OC during the last Walsh championship years. He's the direct disciple of the highest of highness. The Genius.

Last 20 Seasons of Superbowl Champions.

1994 Seifert - Bill Walsh Tree
1995 Jimmy Johnson - His own tree
1996 Holmgren - Bill Walsh Tree
1997 Shanahan - Bill Walsh Tree
1998 Shanahan - Bill Walsh Tree
1999 Dick Vermeil - His own tree (Made Superbowl in 1980 w/ Eagles vs Raiders)
2000 Brian Billick - Bill Walsh Tree (under Dennis Green)
2001 Bill Belichick* - Parcells Tree
2002 Jon Gruden - Bill Walsh Tree (under Paul Hackett)
2003 Bill Belichick* - Parcells Tree
2004 Bill Belichick* - Parcells Tree
2005 Bill Cowher (under Schottenheimer.... Beat Holmgren - Bill Walsh Tree)
2006 Tony Dungy - Bill Walsh Tree (under Dennis Green)
2007 Mike Tomlin - Bill Walsh Tree (under Childress/Dungy.. also under Cowher)
2008 Tom Coughlin - Parcells Tree
2009 Sean Payton - Parcells Tree
2010 Mike McCarthy - Bill Walsh Tree (under Paul Hackett)
2011 Tom Coughlin - Parcells Tree
2012 John Harbaugh - Bill Walsh Tree (under Andy Reid)
2013 Pete Carroll - Bill Walsh Tree (under George Seifert)

Note*: Belichick used Walsh's: The Winning Edge as the Bible after the nuclear winter of his failed stint in Cleveland.

It seems Superbowls grow on trees....

Agree with NC...thanks for posting this. Gets old to have people knock the WCO right here on a niner site!
