In the Dallas game, the mic they had on Willis he came to the sideline and said, "boy playing that Mike sure is a different animal".

I may have said the wrong terminology. I'll default to Wikipedia to help me out here so I can say the right terminology...
There are two types of ILB's, the Mike(for strong side) and the will(for weak side). The Mike typically is the more athletic linebacker, who can blitz, drop into coverage, play the run, and "spy" the quarterback.[11] The Will is typically the stronger and larger of the two linebackers, and is used almost like a Fullback on the defense. He takes on and occupies blockers for the Mike, allowing the Mike to flow to the ball and make tackles
So from this article from Wikipedia - I would think Borland is playing the Will position, and I would think Wilhoit plays the Mike position, because he can flow to the ball and make the tackle. One reason I say this is because Wilhoit probably calls the defenses - being the more experienced Linebacker and also I think is better in space and has the speed to cover. Borland doesn't have the speed that Wilhoit has, although he has instincts - and they are extraordinary! I would think Wilhoit is the better coverage linebacker and Borland is the better Will linebacker - because the defense can benefit from his aggressiveness and also his quick instincts to stuff runs, which I think is the primary responsibility of the Will 'backer.

But you probably are right since Borland is like averaging 11+ solo tackles ever since he started, that is one indication he's playing the Mike position.

The wikipedia terminology is correct from a base standpoint. It's a matter of nomenclature. Under Greg manusky's 3-4 the strong side ILB was called the "TED" and the weakside, the "Mike". Takeo Spikes played the "ted" and Willis the "Mike". In Fangio's scheme, they call the strong side the "Jack" and the weakside the "mike".

Just a matter of nomenclature. In Fangio's scheme, the "mike" is more of the "tackler", in the sense that, he's not supposed to be taking on guards as much, but requires more lateral range to make the tackles. The "jack" has to take on more guards because they're on the "strong" side of the formation where the offense has the numbers advantage to get a lineman up on the LB level. That's one reason your "jack" will have fewer tackles - generally. Because, if they're taking on a guard, their primary job is to stuff the guard in the hole with their inside shoulder and force the run back to the "Mike".

It's actually really tough to figure out who's who between Aldon and Lynch when they wear sleeves. They're both built very similarly. Long arms, athletic build.
On shotgun snaps, Boone looks back and then looks up, taps Martin, and then martin looks back and then snap.

Do you think its easier as a pass rusher to get a good jump knowing the snap is coming after the tap?

Would that explain some of the freakishly high number of sacks lately?

this was the best madlibs i have read all year

Overall:
So overall on 2nd downs, 63% of the time (124 of 196) we had >7 yards to go averaging 10.3 yards to go. In short, 2/3rds of the time we're going BACKWARDS on 1st downs and putting ouselves in 2nd and longs, which as you know, often times snowballs from there. Check out the individual games as well (total # of 2nd down opportunities, against good pass rush teams, familiar foes, etc.) and see if you can note any other trends. Either way, this is extremely alarming and goes well beyond CK, the OL pass protection, RB's, WR drops and the myriad of other "execution" excuses we use in here when looking at the micro-level. A very large portion of this comes down to offensive philosophy, play selection trending and coaching. If we can see these obvious trends as fans, imagine what the DC is game planning for!

Oh.

My.

God.

If anybody still has a question about what is wrong with our offense this year, it was just answered by the above post. When our offensive coordinator has the whole playbook available, we are going BACKWARDS. When the playbook is limited, our quarterback is bailing us out on third down.

There was actually an offsides call against the defense because they didn't snap it on the first "tap". You can call it a fake "tap" because Kaepernick changed the play after the first tap and the dlineman went off sides thinking that it was the actual snap. (I'm guessing the snap was actually on the second tap).
We are going BACKWARDS on first down people!!!

That's a horrible way to start a set of downs. The only good game was ARI and they still lost that one. Good stats.

Is this serious? Are we seriously LOSING yards on first down? That is atrocious. Surprisingly, I feel our 3rd down offense has been much better this year too. Means Kap has had to do a lot more on 3rd and long, bailing us out. Props to Kap man.

3rd Down Failures #7

1st Down: Pass to Miller +5
2nd Down: Hyde run +1

NYG shows cover0 as they crowd the LoS with 6 defenders (4DL, 2 LBs). With and empty backfield, if NYG comes with the 6 man pressure, then one rusher will be unblocked.

49ers: It appears as though the 49ers shorten their routes thinking the blitz is coming.
NYG: cover3

After the snap, the two LBs crowding the A gaps back out and it's a standard 4 man rush. Kap takes the snap and looks to Boldin's slant. It's double covered.

Boone loses to the inside and Kap has to evade.

Kap scrambles right and targets Crabs.

Dropped pass by Crabs. VD might have been open, but I don't like how Hyde's route takes a defender to VD. Didn't matter since protection didn't hold up for VD to be available.

3rd Down Failure #8

1st Down: Hyde run +1
2nd Down: Gore run +2

4Q 3rd & 7
49ers pull ADavis as he and Gore lead a QB sweep.

VD gets the crack back block, but the DE still is able to prevent ADavis from pulling cleanly to the edge. MMartin targets his block, the orange defender.

ADavis and Gore get to the edge to lead.

Martin misses the block on orange.

Gain of +5.
