GO NINERS!!!

wow ^ you two really have been going back and forth about this jam coverage. NCommand, I appreciate your previous statement, we can leave that discussion to the Fangio thread.

But, It's hard to show from just stills but, we did attempt a few - not a lot, but a few jams during the game. They were easily beat, we also tried bump and run and we mostly tried a cushion - which is what we normally do. It's hard to argue with the overall success we've had. We've been a top defense every year Fangio has been here.

This was, by far, the toughest offense we have played, probably in the Harbaugh era - so, I'm not terribly upset with the loss considering we've lost this poorly to much less offensively talented teams.

You bet! I don't want to derail a great thread on defensive philosophy.
Throw away game plain and simple. Could and should be completely different if we see them again. And we all know when that would be.

Great stuff jonnydel, I agree with you that this game was so one sided that there isn't much you can take away and learn because there was so many breakdowns pretty much everywhere. I think this is one of the games you flush down the toilet because injuries can't be cured with film study and coaching.

Really, if everything went our way and colin and anquan and Dawson all scored, and no interception by Colin or injury to Kilgore, and let's Say VD had half an inch thick coating of stick-um on him, the way Peyton was playing, it would have come down to whoever had the ball last. I remember watching the shootout between a veteran Barkowski and the young gun Montana. Atlanta won because they got the ball last. Neither defense that day could stop a paperclip going by. It would have probably been something like that in the Donkey game if our offense played like they did against the Lambs.

I know the story of the game was Manning, but this game was about the trenches. The DEN Oline just neutralized any sort of pressure from the 49ers, which allowed Manning to pick and choose his mismatch. Lynch had a nice sack, but the pressure on Manning was nothing close to consistent. When the 49ers blitzed, the DEN Oline did a nice job of picking it up. Like jonnydel mentioned, the 49ers threw a bunch of different coverages at Manning, but with no one in his face, never having to worry about the rush, he was able to calmly analyze the coverage.

Offensively, the 49er Oline did barely okay as the offense was able to put together a couple scoring drives, but when there were breakdowns it was bad. Couple that with the dropped passes and it was over for the offense. DEN did a nice job baiting Kap into the INT. They knew Kap was throwing the Go/fade route when he saw press man and used that against him. I'll show the series of plays that led to that INT. DEN mainly played man coverage, but mixed in zone as well.

SJ is electric and should be starting over Crabs. Forget hurt feels, it's time to play the player that deserves the playing time. I don't see the separation from Crabs, although in this game, DEN has some good CBs in Talib and Harris.

I'll just show a bunch of the big DEN plays first. Let it hurt. Then go to some good 49er stuff. Maybe that will make this loss feel better.
^^ Every OL has neutralized the niner pass rush this year! It's hard to believe that missing Aldon Smith means no pass rush but that seems to be the case. I'm amazed they couldn't manufacture more with the athletes they have...but then, many were injured for Denver...Oh well...two weeks to get healthy and hopefully they'll let A Smith back early. I didn't believe we needed to draft a pass rusher in the first round this coming draft but now...maybe!

Here's the Welker TD.

49ers: cover1 man (rush 5). Just before the snap, Skuta starts to approach the LoS as if to blitz. He will actually just fake the blitz and it's Borland who is the 5th rusher. Welker is #83.

The blitz is picked up with the TE and the RB staying in to bock for 7 man protection. Manning pump fakes on the fake WR screen to DThomas (#88). Brock bites on the pump fake, but DThomas is his man. Reid, however, bites hard.

Brock ends up having to chase Welker.

(not shown from this view) At the end of the play, Brock quickly turns around to face Reid as if to say "wtf man"

2Q 3rd & 7
Here's a coverage I do not see the 49ers play often - cover2 zone. They dress it up by giving a 1 deep safety look. Then with Cox taking one of the deep zones as they rotate Reid to play as an underneath defender.
DEN: Hi-low read to Manning's left.

As soon as Manning sees Reid give the "pass off" gesture when ESanders runs past Reid's zone, Manning sees all he needs to confirm zone coverage. The High- Low routes attacks DJohnson's zone to get a vertical stretch on Johnson (and Reid). They pay attention to the RB in the flat and it gives ESanders room to work the High read directly behind them, and in front of the safety (Bethea).

Mid wind up.

This play was a triple whammy. 3rd down conversion, Lynch personal foul (head butt), lost a replay challenge.

If Johnson had tried to jam Sanders near the LOS instead of letting him run right by him into Reid's zone, he might have been able to disrupt the timing of the play and/or throw Sanders off his route, preventing the completion.

This is the huge DThomas 49 yard catch and run.

3Q 1st & 10
49ers: cover 1 man (rush 5). Brooks lines up over the slot WR, will creep up to the LoS before the snap, and come on the rush.

The blitz is picked up with 6 man protection as the TE stays in to block. DThomas (#88) stems his route to the outside. Brock reacts.

Manning is mid windup (hard to see) as DThomas breaks back to the inside to complete the double move.

DThomas just caught the ball. The amount of separation is due to Brock getting spun around by the double move.

Brock's attempt at slowing down DThomas with his right arm does nothing. DThomas is too big and strong for Brock.

+49 yards (RAC not shown)
