3 dropped ints
I counted at least 5 dropped passes
4 TO's
97 penalties

You do that and you will lose most games

that's another thing too. those db's have to catch those int's cutler tossed up there to them. have to.

especially that fumbled snap.

just fall on the damn ball. we get it at the 2 yard line this game is basically over at that point. all the way over.

Giving up a 17 point lead at home, ZERO pass rush, 16 penalties, four turnovers by Kaep, a chance to go one up on the Seahawks and keep pace with the Cards, plus being in the national spotlight in our new stadium is too much to just dismiss. The "they will just be fine" argument doesn't hold up IMO.
How much of this logic applied to week 2 last year?

"Had a chance to go up on the Seahawks"
Both 49ers and Seattle were 1-0 last year coming into the game. We could've went up a game on Seattle, but we didn't.

"Four turnovers by Kaepernick"
Kaepernick threw 3 picks last year against the Seahawks, including 2 in the fourth quarter. He also fumbled the ball on a Cliff Avril sack -- a fumble that the Seahawks recovered. Four turnovers.

"16 penalties"
We had 11 penalties for 121 yards in the Seahawks game, including these two:
  • on 3rd and 28 in the 3rd quarter, Seattle completed a 15-yard pass. After the play (i.e. what would've been 4th and 13), Aldon Smith racked up a personal foul and gave the Seahawks a first down. Seattle scored a touchdown instead of a field goal.
  • in the red zone on 2nd and 11, Ahmad Brooks sacked Wilson for an 8-yard loss. Instead of 3rd and 19, Brooks was called for a facemask, and Seattle got first and goal again. Instead of a likely field goal, the Seahawks scored a touchdown.

"national spotlight" / statement game
This was Sunday Night Football. We could've went into Seattle's house and showed them who the best team in football was. We didn't. We lost.

So basically the major differences are that we weren't up big, and we were on the road. Still, all things considered, eerily similar. Last year we recovered and were fine. This year we will recover and be fine.

97 penalties seems a bit low, did you even watch the game

we win a title our first year there?
I'm interested in what fellow posters think about one of my ideas in the OP. If Anthony Davis isn't ready to start at RT next week, move Boone to RT and play Looney at RG. IMO, Boone is a fine tackle and would play fine at RT as he's showed in the past and Looney is much better than J.Martin IMO also. The OL would be better as a whole with a right side of Boone/Looney rather than Martin/Looney.

Thoughts?
Thanks Matt49er, I totally agree with Lemonier, he has no power rush and his speed rush is easy to contain. I don't know what the story is with Tank, put him in on passing downs and rush the passer, simple enough. Dial is a load, get him in there. My real concern is Kap, from week to week it's becoming good Kap, bad Kap.

Saw a tweet this morning that said Lemonier's grade is the lowest of all 3-4 OLBs in the NFL.

Just like the last 3 years this yr will end the same with disappointment we are not good enough to win a Championship our QB hasn't taken the next step and the coaching staff on the offensive side sucks that includes Harbaugh if he hasn't yet by the end of the season he will indeed LOSE THE LOCKER.

What a tease these past 4 seasons have been

Alright guys let's take a step back now. We lost, the loss was horrible, a total collapse against a team we should have murdered on the opening night of our new awesome stadium on prime time TV at that. It sucked, I raged out on here in the gameday thread and on twitter the entire 2nd half. Let's get back to reality, we were never ever going to go 16-0, Seattle lose and we play the only 2-0 team in our division next week so we can be right back in 1st place after week 3, it's not the end of the world.

We have some adjustments to make sure, we absolutely must cut down on the mental mistakes and limit the penalties. We no doubt are going to get a lot better when guys like Bowman, Aldon and Dorsey return, we're a long way from seeing this team at their best. With that said, here's some simple adjustments I think we need to make next week.

Offense:
-Stop being so "cute" never run the ball with Bruce Miller, we have Gore and Hyde, get them the GD ball. We should have ran the ball A LOT more last night IMO. If we would have kept at the run game, we would have scored more points period. Now what. Now what. Are we running too much or too seldom?

-If A.Davis isn't ready to start at RT next week, put Boone there and play Looney at RG. At this point, Looney is a MUCH better option than J.Martin who got abused in the 2nd half last night. Looney IMO is a future starter somewhere, good chance it's here considering I don't see either Iupati or Boone here 2 years from now. NO, please don't do that. the o-line needs some rhythm. That would be another change again.

-Use Bruce Ellington more. This guy can be our Harvin/Cobb if we just use him. I love him on Jet screens (or arounds, whatever the F it's called), I like him as a slot WR, as a safety valve out of the backfield for Kaep, all that mess. YES, YES, YES. Though, We don't even use SJ much, thus I don't see any chances for Ellington at all.

Defense:
-First, let's look at the positives, the run D was very good, we shut down Forte, Wilholte looked good, Ian Williams played much better than he did in wk1, Bethea was good in run support. This is how the 49ers stop the run, we need to keep it up. Now onto the adjustments: Yep.

-Lemonier is a nice prospect, I like him, with that said, he isn't getting any pressure at all, yet he's playing more than Lynch, Tank & Dial combined (CL 28 snaps, Lynch 18, Dial 4, Tank 1). Which brings me to my next point. Yep.

-Dial & Tank simply must play more period. Dial played 4 snaps and I noticed him on every single one of them pushing his guy around, in 4 snaps, 2 QB hurries, one big hit (bad penalty but the point is, he got to the QB) and a tackle. Tank playing 1 snap is ridiculous, especially when you consider that TJE played 21. My solution, give Dial/Tank all of TJE's snaps, let Dial play a few plays at NT and let Tank have some of either Ray Mac or Lemonier's 3rd down's to rush the passer (with the others going to Lynch). Our only pass rush is coming from Justin Smith, we need to generate more and no matter how much we scream for it, Fangio is not going to blitz all that often. We must have our best personnel on the field, Vic Fangio/Tomsula/Harbaugh and everybody just needs to get over it. You cannot compare TJE to Tank, i.e. you cannot say, why did TJE play on 21 snaps but Tank only on one? We are talking about completely different types of players.
TJE played at NT, iirc. Tank is a pass-rushing threat, who would come from RDE but at RDE, usually Justin will be lined up. So, how should we insert Tank in the line-up without pulling Justin and make the d-line worse?

-Blitz a little more. I'm not a fan of constantly blitzing, I'm also not a fan of never blitzing. We're missing Aldon and Bowman, we need to generate a rush. Send Willis up the middle every once in a while, send an extra man or 2 sometimes, come on Fangio.
Iirc, we blitzed on that one 3rd down when Cutler gained 25 yards...just my 2 cents.

Or maybe the Webzone's reaction after a loss is closer to something like this:

  1. A win in our brand new stadium showed the league that no one will beat us in our own house. Well instead showed the league we can be beaten at home and the crowd is no help. It appeared to me the Bears offense was able to communicate normally.
  2. A win over the Bears would have solidified that the win in Dallas wasn't just against a mediocre team.

IMO, crowd was probably in shock just like I was. Normally, I yell and scream when the 49ers lose, last night, I sat in my chair with my mouth wide open.

Not just a scrappy team - an injured team. We were at home with a 17 point lead. This is a very big deal and it's time to call a spade a spade; there is something fundamentally wrong with the coaching.

This is the very definition of an overreaction man. Remember last year after the Niners started out 1-2, got killed by the Colts, lost 10-9 to the Panthers and everybody, including a large portion of the fan base thought we were "done". What happened after that?

That was then. This is now. Different set of circumstances. We haven't adapted to our new play makers on offense. We most likely won't either! And that's the problem, we don't adapt/adjust. It wouldn't matter if we were unstoppable with what we were doing, but we are easily stopped. If our QB were able to run a hurry up offense, or simply call plays at the line (ala Manning/Rivers etc) we would be much harder to defend. Our style in the past was to play a conservative offense, get ahead, and rely on the defense to close out the game. That's not going to work this year, and we brought in the weapons to spark the offense in anticipation of the probability. Unfortunately, our coaching staff is unable to utilize those players to our advantage. Hard times ahead...
