1. Establish a running game.
They need to keep giving the ball to Gore and Hunter like they did against Seattle. If both Hunter and Gore combine for more than 20 carries, the 49ers are undefeated.
2. Protect Alex Smith.
One of the biggest strengths of the Cardinals is their pass rushing ability. They are ranked third in the league in total team sacks.This could another low-scoring defensive battle if the pass protection isn't there.
3. Stop Fitzgerald, but don't forget about the supporting cast.
The Cardinals have other receivers who are under the radar in Doucet and Roberts. Roberts in particular has been a go-to-guy if Fitzgerald is covered. Rob Housler who has been quietly a solid receiving TE as well.
4. Take advantage of the Cardinals' OL in pass protection
The OL has allowed the most sacks in the league so far this season. There have been 35 sacks allowed, which is nine more than the second highest team has. If Skelton is uncomfortable in the pocket for most of the game, the offense for the Cardinals will be in trouble.
5. Don't become too conservative when in the red zone
Roman cannot call predictable running plays or basic pass plays that are easy to cover. This is a division game and both teams know each other fairly well. The Cardinals' defense could potentially keep the team hanging around if they limit the 49ers to field goals. Execution and play calling need to be effective so that the team can finish their drives in the end zone.
